The keen eyed who read Evo magazine will see this month that Richard Porter has struck back against myself and Peter Vaughan for our valiant defence of the 400 / 412.
In his column, Richard describes his unhappy experience driving a (clearly tired) 400, concluding "it was cr*p"...

This is what you get for defending our cars!
I feel like writing back to say he's welcome to try my car anytime...maybe Peter would say the same....

I wouldnt worry, there is no motoring writer who's work I enjoy less than anything written by Richard Porter.

    It doesn't matter. Full stop.

I enjoy every second that I drive my 400 and couldn't give a rats arse what anyone else thinks.

Maybe these special cars will have their day in the spotlight and if that day comes we can all sit back and smugly smile.

And if they don't ? Well I'm smiling already so who cares !!!!

There is definately nothing wrong with the 400, has a great V12 engine, the looks get better with each year and at the end of the day its a Ferrari, one that must be very enjoyable to take on long trips.

I am sure Richard does not have the satisfaction of going for a drive in a Ferrari V12 whenever the feeling takes hold, which we do. His loss.
His words do not put me off my 400 driving pleasure.

I don't begrudge Richard his opinion - it's his and no one has the right to tell him he's wrong and we're right.

He writes for a magazine and as such will always be potentially controversial and divide opinion - it's his job.

I personally dislike a certain Ferrari model (which I won't name) but plenty of people obviously love them - I just can't see why. I understand its personal taste and as such respect their choice.

After all that's all it is - a choice.

I guess that would be something built from 1999 onwards - often driven by pretentious wankers and drug dealers (who give the real enthusiasts a bad name!! - hope that saves me..)

You're right and also wrong - F-Cars of that period hold little or no inerest for me but I'm referring to something a bit older.

You're saved anyway as you have Islero in your name - one of my all time favourite Lambos but one that sadly I've missed the boat on price wise. When they were £15k I couldn't afford one, now I could afford one at that price (or even double) the prices have substantially increased so I can't afford one again.

    Bugger !

Consoled myself yesterday by buying another car I've always wanted - albeit a more modern soon-to-be classic. Found a BMW 850 CSI M-Sport 6-speed manual with 36,000 on the clock. Since my divorce took my bought new 840 CI Sport in 2000 I've always wanted another and this ones a real beauty - not an Islero but Hey Ho !!

Problem is as I get older I'm. getting really car greedy - very dangerous financially !

Yeh, I passed on one at about that money when my wife got diagnosed with cancer. After that long road (which is not exactly done yet but looking good) as you say that ship has well and truly sailed. Always liked the 365/400's and in my mind a very similar car to the Islero. They were my two favorite cars as a kid in the 70's - maybe I'm kind of weird but I liked the practicality mixed with the V12.
