The first thing you need to do is evaluate your experience and skill level before you go out and pick a car. HONESTLY figure out what experience you have and then think about what you want to do. That is hard, because everybody believes that they have much more skill than the average driver, and of course you want something that is fast for going out on the track, but the truth is that many novice drivers get in way over their heads from the getgo. And this is coming from a track instructor that has had the holy you know what scared out of him by some inexperienced drivers....

When you get out on the track the first thing that you will realize is that a balanced car with good weight distribution is one of the most important things.

The Evo is basically a front drive car and will handle like one. It is fast, no question about it, but it is going to be about a pleasant as being stuck in wet cement after a half an hour on the track. It is not a durable as a Porsche in that environment, that is why Mitusibshi has been voiding warranties for any cars used in "track type" events. That goes for autocrosses too....

The 993 is a better choice for a track car but remember that as soon as you start using a car that hard the spectre of high maintenance is going to rear it's ugly head. Do you know why the call those things PoorSH!^s... It's because when you go to the dealers to buy a part the guy behind the parts counter says "Oh, you PoorSH!^ do you know what that's going to cost!!!!" Not sure that you can get a decent 993 for that kind of money and have something that is "trackable". Also, going fast in Porsche is not for the novice. You will find that you can get into more trouble in that car more quickly than you can say "OH SH!^" and the costs of an OH SH!^ are really expensive.

If you don't have any track experience think maybe about not jumping off in the deep end, maybe a Miata (rear drive, not too much power and good handling) will let you get some experience before you move up to the really fast car. You only have to keep it a season or two, but that is probably a better idea for a novice. What you find out is that the fun at the track is in the corners and a lighter more balanced car is a lot more fun out there, and the power isn't as big a deal.

Also put in your budget the add in's like a set of track wheels and tires, and all the other things that go into tracking a car. And don't say "well, I wasn't planning on doing more than an event or two a year" because after a couple of weekends you will find that it is addicting...

Expect to get addicted too, it is fun!!!

And your point? Actually it takes very little money to get 500hp in a 993 turbo. And very reliable hp at that. It's all relative. In the end you will have a Porsche, and not a Mitsubishi. If it were all about saving money, we would all drive civics. Not Ferraris.

It is an AWD car. And the understeer that might've plagued the earlier USDM models has been wiped out with the new Evo X. See, the older models sold in other markets came with the vaunted S-AYC systems; sadly, the US market was left behind. The new Evo (including the USDM one) comes with S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) which includes the yaw control. When you turn off all the other aids and keep the AYC component on, the car oversteers like a drunken kung fu master.

The first few user reviews of the X are coming into the Evo forums. Here's an especially amusing account of the oversteering character of the new car :

Parker, looks like you and I made a good choice. Can't wait to get my hands on my X with SST and throw it around the F1 track at Sepang. :D
