If you were to pick two cars to represent the evolution of Ferrari from day one to now what would they be? You may choose from any car including race, sports, touring, prototype, etc.

I have a special project in mind and want to show the progression of Ferrari and their methodology. There's soooo many options I can't narrow it down so I humbly turn to the experts here. My two personal favorites so far have been 125 S and Enzo or 250 P and 333 SP.

    How about the Barchettas?

DON'T pick the "Californias," too depressing, despite recent Forza article by Winston Goodfellow.

ANY Ferrari. Heck, even the FF if you think it's appropriate. Just make sure to pair it to it's "significant" other of the past.

Both competition machines related to the current street machines, and the oldest and newest existing models.

330 P3 and 458 GT3. The heritage is very apparent.

both cars set the engineering and styling trends for a few decades.

You use words like "progression" and "evolution" and then say you want just two cars? Two cars don't show progression, I think you would need three minimum to have anything that would indicate progression. You couldn't show a picture of Pangea and then of the world today and use it to show progression. You would need at least one picture of the middle to show the "progression."

308GT4 was the first V8, this engine went into the 308GTB, it got 4 valve heads and became the 308QV, it got bumped up to 3.2L and went into the 328. That engine got turned sideways with .2L more and powered the 348. A little more displacement and a new head with 5 valves powered the 355. This basic engine got bigger again with a new intake manifold went on to power the 360. Back to 4valves with a bit more displacement and you get the 430....

Like that. That's evolution and progression.

As Brian suggested, if 3 cars then 250 GTO, 288 GTO, and 599 GTO, much like Top Gear did on one of their segments.

Thanks for all the great input and suggestions.

I agree that it's difficult to illustrate this concept solely based on two cars but I'm limited by time constraints. I want to debut the piece at Cavallino and there just isn't enough time to do three plus the display space isn't big enough for three 1/4 scales. Heck, the other artists already are pissed because my work is so big. I'd like to do this as a running series in the future so I could try to cover the bases.

I've been doing a lot of carbon fiber work so I'm considering a composite car for the latter. Perhaps I could then show the old world method of buck and aluminum and the new technology of carbon/composites.

    Keep 'em coming!!!

    Awesome suggestions!

There's so many great ideas it's going to be hard to pick just one. My first choice would be the 250 GTO/599 GTO but I just did a 250 GTO this past year so I better pick something different.

I really, really love the P3/P4 but I am not sure what would make a good counterpart.

Too difficult to narrow down to just two, especially if you include all Ferraris. I am just going to focus on the road cars and not the race or limited production halo cars.

    1) & 2): 250TR and 250 GTO: Not much needed to be said there.
    3) Dino: First production mid-engined Ferrari.
    4) Testarossa series: Served as the base of all modern day mid-engine Ferrari from the setup POV. It is the first mid-engined Ferrari with radiators on the side-rear. Also the last of the production mid-engined, 12 cylinder Ferrari.
    5) F355-F1: First Semi-Auto gearbox.
    6) 550: Marks Ferrari's return to front engined design.
    7) Ferrari FF: First AWD Ferrari.

With the 250 GT SWB Ferrari established itself on a global scale as a leading builder of competitioncars. With the 308 GTB, Ferrari hit the big time in a commercial sense, giving it the foundation to become what it is today.

Ferrari used to be primarily about front engined V12's they are now probably known better for their mid-mounted cars, on that basis and confining myself to the road I would choose the 206 GT to the 458

That's exactly what's kicking around in my head the most. Have to admit I was thinking of the 125 s instead of the 166 even though the 166 is prettier IMHO.

If an Enzo was the last Ferrari "super car" What would be the first? Most say the 250 GTO but I've often thought the 250 LM as the first super car made by Ferrari.

You could go with the 250 GT LWB and the Enzo. The LWB got its more common moniker, the Tour de France, after overwhelming the competition at the same-named road race so many years ago. If you sit real still, and listen real hard, you can still hear the other entrants why-bothering.

The Enzo wasn't just groundbreaking for Ferrari, but for the automobile in general. Cars are still relatively new, but if there was a million-year timeline, the Enzo would be on it.

Nothing embodies the history of Ferrari like a V12, so you should consider sticking with those. Another nice pair would be the 275 GTB/4 and the 550 Maranello (or, if you want to go the convertible route, do a NART Spyder and a 550 Barchetta).

But the gimme, as has already been mentioned, is the 250 GTO/599 GTO (plus you'll get more money for a piece like that).

I wasn't aware you could be managed. :)
