Does anybody know what causes this? I'm trying to get an appointment with a doctor for today...but would also like some of your opinions...my situation is this:

Almost every morning I wake up because my nose is bleeding...I put my head forward and pinch my nose near the bone and it usually lasts about 2-5 minutes and then I get on with my day...it happens for any random reason, without being provoked (don't pick my nose) and sometimes even more then once a day (it has been going on for months now).
About an hour ago while I was laying back in the bath I felt the taste of blood in my mouth and knew I had a nose bleed, I sat up and put my head forward like always, but it just wouldn't stop, the blood would rush out like faucet and every now and then I would spit out chunks of blood. After about 10-15 mins it finally stopped but I was left in a bath full of blood...I've NEVER experienced anything like that in my short life.

This isn't normal, is it? the weird thing is it only happens on one side of my nose...does anybody know what can cause something like this?
I'm in pretty good health, I'm a young high school student that does a lot of running and plays basketball very often, I try to eat healthy but I still can't resist all the junk food, I don't have any major medical problems and don't take any pills, not even for headaches...the only problem I have is that I have a hydrocele (Uro will know what that is...) but I doubt it has any relation to that...

Any help will be appreciated...Thank you for listening...

Commonly, a dry nasal mucosa can result in nosebleeds, especially from an area toward the front of the septum called Kesselbach's plexus: a network of fine capillaries.
Saline sprays usually do the trick, but sometimes the doctor has to cauterize that area.
    Good luck.

Thank you for the replies...Junga - I was a bit confused with all those words...but google helped me out :). is the nasal mucosa, sort of like a dark red blood colored piece of flesh? can it tear? could that be what the chunks of blood red flesh that came out be?
Is salina made of basically the same thing as saline breast implants? I have found this link which seems to say good things and bad things about it. http://www.ent-consult.com/salineadditives.html

BigDog - the air around me isn't that dry, I keep a window open at all times, all day even in the winter. but sometimes with the heating on it can be a bit suffocating, could that be a cause?

I had this same problem. Chronic nosebleeds, for about 3 years....tried putting vaseline up my nose, humidifier, everything.....it helped a little bit, but not too much. Finally I went in to the ER on one very bad bleed and had my nose cauterized. (they use a chemical cauterizer)....it burned real bad for about 30 seconds.........I haven't had a nosebleed now in 4 years. Period.

Sadly cauterization is not a permanent fix.

I've personally had nosebleeds all my life. I've had ones that I went through an entire roll of paper towels, and one where I had to clean the driveway off with a garden hose...

my nose has been cauterized twice already, and at 21 I am just as susceptible to getting the random nosebleeds at any time of day as well.

So far, I have yet to find anything that really helps. Just be wary of getting it cauterized. I do recommend going to a ENT specialist (Ear Nose and Throat specialist.) Sometimes they can help, sometimes they can't, but they will definitely give you better advice then what you'll get at an urgent care place.

I get them occasionally in the winter when the dry heat runs... this may be gross but I put some Neosporin on my little finger and twist it up my nose. It works (for a week).

If this is happening only in the winter I would check the humidity levels with a humidastat. Don't just guess. If it is around 40% or below I'd get a humidifier or two. Portable ones don't work well at all. If you have central air, have one installed on the unit. Drink a couple of litres of water a day and see if that helps.

A couple of other reasons could be lack of sleep and lack of iron. So getting great rest and eating your leafy veggies might help (spinich).

Lots of good advice here. Good news and bad news...bad news first, a nosebleed could be a sign of a more sinister underlying condition. The good news is that at your age and current health it is probably a sign that the hunidifier in your house is set too low with the furnace on.

When you sleep you are probably an obligate nose breather. As you inhale the drier warm air in your house this will dry out the nasal mucosa. This layer of tissue is very thin and rich in blood supply so a little crack can bleed like a mother. Try dialing up the humidifier, getting a room humidifier or using saline sprays before you go to bed and after you wake up in the morning.

As to why it only happens in one nostril, who knows it could be a multitude of reasons but here is my best guess...remember I am a funeral director, not a doctor so my knowledge of disease and anatomy is not to MD spec...maybe you had a plugged nostril or have a deviated septum and more dry air was comming through one side. This one nostril became dried and cracked and you got a nosebleed. This crack scabbed over but never healed fully...it continues to be dry and bleed easily but it is probably from the same area.

If you continue to have problems go see an MD.

I buried a guy earlier this week that had a pretty bad coke habit. The septum in his nose had completely disolved so you could look in one nostril and see light from the other side...you think he had a nosebleed problem?

Had the same problem when I was your age (a gong, gong time alo) - every Sunday for months, just before church! Everybody was suspicious, though. It was great - got to watch a whole season of Hockey when they only focused on a couple of teams (playing different opponents, of course).

I get them in the am as well. For me it is definately the dry heat in the house. I did not read every repsonse here, but the severity of the bleeds sounds concerning and like another poster mentioned it could be indicative of a larger medical problem. Some one corect me if I am wrong, but couldn't it be high blood pressure. Good luck

It sure could be...along with a host of other maladies...but he does not seem to be in the age group that would have to worry about high blood pressure. Rule out the simple stuff then go for rarities.

By the way, most sinus & plastic surgeons use a spray pre-op w/ a mixture containing cocaine as an analgesic as well as a vasoconstrictor to reduce bleeding
