1983, 308 QV, Mondial. Air pump removed. Cats "gutted". Are the shields, that are integral to the manifolds, needed? (They have a loud, "tinney" rattle)

My car is also a '83 QV and the enclosed aluminum heat shields are falling apart and rattling badly. I have temporarily secured them with hose clamps and aluminum wire. My Cats gutted like yours; so that less heat is produced. I was thinking of making up some aluminum or stainless deflection heat shields to keep excess heat out of the engine compartment.

If you remove the shielding and have the headers ceramic coated the underhood temperatures will be LOWER than with all that thick shielding. I would not reccomend not having any kind of coating or shielding though. That would build up a ton of heat.

Your other option is to WRAP the headers.

+1. Removing the shielding without ceramic coating or something else will be bad. You will get so much heat you can melt a fuel line. Trust me on this.

Do you think the headers can be removed with the engine in the car?
