Exhaust Bypass Solenoid

    Is there a way to test the exhaust bypass solenoid when they are off the car? My CEL came on with p1448 which is usually caused by the bypass solenoid. So I ordered a new one since they were cheap, but I want to make sure that is the problem. I'm not sure if I put current on this solenoid what I would see. I have a new bypass valve already so I know it is not that.

    Before I even put the new one on, I went through and cleaned both of them and checked all the hoses and put them back. I reset the CEL and it has not come back on even after some spirited driving.

    I may end up with a spare, but if anyone has a way to test these I would appreciate it.

    This is solenoid 159177, there are two behind the right rear wheel. (one for air pump, one for exhaust bypass.

    Great description of the "issue" :)!
    Yes, they are very easy to test. One just needs a 12v source. You can use a battery charger to put current to the soleniod. Polarity is not important because you only need to excite the coil inside.
    After you put 12v to it, you should feel/hear it click. You can also blow into the bottom barb (the end one) and notice that air will flow through when you have current to it. When you take the current off it sould not flow. The other barb will flow air slightly all the time. That allows the valve to close when the vacuum source is shut by the solenoid.

    Just as a side note, blowing anything that has a 12v battery attached
    to it, bad idea.

    How about using an air compressor and just shooting some air thru it?

    I just told my wife that she had to fix it, and it involved geting it excited and blowing. LOL

    If you want to get her really going, you may want to use more
    then 12 volts.

    The rubber hose has plenty of electrical insulation to prevent any shock.
