The F40 has 9 cylinders, and 3 turbos, so there is 1 pipe for each bank of 3 cylinders.

    I could be wrong though:)

Funny stuff. It really has a tri turbo three cylinder yugo engine, highly modified, of course :)

The middle exhaust is the turbo wastegate.

Correct me if I am wrong...The two outter pipes are for the cylinder gasses and the middle pipe is for the Turbo.

I think what you meant is correct, but to be complete:

The middle pipe is for the turbo wastegate.

The outer pipes provide outflow from the muffler (if stock) which accepts the exhaust gases which have already driven the turbos...

As an aside, the right hand turbo (driven by right bank exhaust gases) pressurizes intake to the left hand bank cylinders... and vice versa.

Nope the middle one is the fuel cap. You fill it up with gas in the middle pipe and it exits out of the two on the sides.

everyone is close but you forgot to mention that the middle pipe adds 400HP without it, the F40 would only make 78HP!! Plus the middle pipe accounts for 90% of the cars curb weight......;)

I just found out that the F40 actually has 2 engines, one in the front, and one in the rear. The front engine drives the left set of wheels, and the rear engine drives the right side of wheels. The center exhaust is for the front engine.

I also believe there are 2 gas pedals to control each engine. This was Ferrari's way of controlling understeer.

    Guys you are all wrong!
The middle exhaust pipe functions approximately as a music instrument.
While the two other pipes let the emissions out, the middle one takes care of the engine sound which has been separated from the gases right after leaving the cylinders. That way the emissions do not have to fight for space together with the sound in the pipes, effectively facilitating free flow of gases. In this way the F40 can put out a few extra HP. Remember this car is a very optimized piece of engineering in every respect.

You can actually verify this experimentally yourself by placing your face right up the exhaust. If you make sure that your nose fits into the middle pipe and your ears are located at the left and right pipes respectively. Have someome fire up the engine and revv it hard to the redline a few times. If done properly, ie your face is close enough you will actually not hear any noise at all from the two exhaust pipes, and you will not smell any exhaust gases from the middle soundpipe!

    ever again...
