I didn't like the look of the exhaust hangers on my car. I keep the motor and bay detailed and clean as best as I can, and these were just an eyesore. So I set out to refurbish them. Take a look, I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

First before I removed any of the original parts or brackets, I bought some spares in case anything was frozen together or broke during removal. This left me with almost a complete set of spares which I may put up for sale, stay tuned.

Before: This was what the brackets looked like when opening the engine lid, this was unsightly and not representative of the quality of care I shower on this car:

The ceramic coating is called Cerakote, which is supposedly good to 1800 degrees F and won't suffer any shock when hot and splashed with water. I used a place in Keyport, New Jersey for this and there were a lot of other customers there picking up and dropping off exhaust manifolds and similar parts. Turnaround was about 4 weeks.

I'm not all that familiar with plating, I contacted 3 local companies for the yellow cad work, one place in NJ wasn't interested in small batch work; one in Long Island would have handled it but they weren't convenient for me to drop off and pick up the parts so I then found another place in northern NJ that were really friendly to deal with and they did the yellow cad plating for me - turnaround was about 2 weeks.

While the parts were out for refinishing I let the steel wool "barrels" located within the springs soak in a bucket of CLR, and every day I'd shake the bucket to agitate the parts and solution, and boy did it remove a lot of crud and brighten the steel wool.

That was my project, thanks for looking.

One more item - I figured I'd share the "trick" to removing and reinstalled the bushing in the lower brackets. By sheer luck, a piece of 3/8" copper pipe has the perfect diameter to use to push out, and then reinstall the bushing. When removing, I used a c-clamp with a half-inch long piece of 3/8" copper pipe on one side, and 1" long 1/2" copper pipe on the other side, and slowly closed the c-clamp until the bearing pushed out into the 1/2" pipe.

Re installation was easier, I just used the 3/8" copper pipe piece and a hammer and gently knocked it back in, it does not need much force.

    Looks great Phil!

Cerakote is solid choice as it yields a very tough, heat resistant finish. It also can be a DIY job if one is so inclined. I've Cerakoted parts for my Alfa restoration in my garage using their air-cured rather than heat-cured coatings. Cerakote adheres best when parts are sandblasted with 70-80g medium. Also needs a small tip (0.8) when spraying. If a 2nd coat is required, it'd need to go on before the 1st coat has dried to the touch. Parts can be handled within 24 hrs and fully cured within 4 days or so.

Similarly, small batch plating also can be done in one's garage. Check out Caswell plating. I've yellow chromated all the various bolts, washers, nuts, brackets etc for my Alfa at home. There are a few tricks to learn, but once done I've achieved the same results as I'd get using a local plater. I like that I can run very small batches, or large batches at my discretion. There's also lower odds of parts getting lost or having to figure out where everything goes once back from the plater. I recently re-plated the catch for my 355's engine lid. I don't have a before pic, but it was pretty beat up and had some surface rust. After pic is below.

    Thank you!

I have 2 spare sets, one refinished, one not, that have been listed in the classified section for awhile now. Lots of inquiries, but no commitments yet.

Get your 355 ready for spring and get them while they are available!
