    Hello from Germany,

I want to remove the rear bank ( facing the trunk ) exhaust header due to a small crack on the welding seams, which I want to repair.
My question; has anyone of you ever removed the rear exhaust header on a drysump 308 GTB ? I ask this, because I think, that the lower oil line from the tank to the pump may interfere and has to be loosened.
This and any additional hints on header removal would be highly appreciated.

Best Regards and thank you in advance

    Martin

Martin, I believe you have a simple euro carbed dry sump car with euro headers? I am not familiar with the sump reservoir's exact placement, but I do not believe it should prevent the header from dropping out. You should remove the parking brake equaliser bolts, and drop it down out of the way. The header should come out from below. Otherwise you may need to loosen the reservoir and move it aside, but I dont think I ever heard anyone say that was necessary.

Now the front header. Thats a whole other story.

Martin I cant respond for the dry sump but on the wet sump it's fairly easy.Once you have removed all the bolts and the heat shield you have to remove the rear engine mount bolts(or at least loosen them fully) and jack the rear of the engine up so that the header clears.I ahve done this a few times and the first time I removed the muffler but found out that it wasn't necessary.I have never removed any handbrake parts.PS I must also add that this is for the GT4 but the principle should be the same

"2" 1977 308 GTB's, clean euro headers on one, unshielded US headers on the other, both rear headers came out from underneath after dropping the parking brake mechanism. No motor mount loosening, no engine jacking, nothing else to remove or take out of the way. Probably one of the easier parts to remove from these engines, at least without that shielding on them.

thank you both so far; yes I have a '80 carbed Euro GTB. My header has the short test pipes ( for CO-probes ) and two small shields.
If the shields are interfering it is possible to remove them prior to removal of the header.

    Best Regards from Germany
