My 328 pigeon noise is gone for a $50 buck part. I had a high pitch pigeon noise, like a school yard metal whistle I heard in my 5th grade P.E. class. It was embarassing during punching the gas, at toll boths, or tunnels but now its gone. A stainless steel roughly 3 inch long tube with a cut on one side so that it will expand. Just needed to cover up the holes in the exhaust tips. Slid right in by tapping it with a rubber mallot.

It was hard to find, but the former ferrari dealership of los gatos, now the autogroup of los gatos, had a box of them tucked away from when they fabricated it back then. The parts manager of ferrari of silicon valley use to work there and knew exactly what I was talking about. He called them on my behalf, now that is a service dept.

Any way you can point me to your contact so I can buy some of those? I have a QV that has the same "VW" exhaust....... I hate it.

No need to get extravagant, just buy a tube of muffler cement and fill in the holes in the resonated exhaust tips. Total cost, a couple of bucks.

Mine had the noise too. To test what tip it was coming from, I cut the bottom off some campbell's soup cans & lit them up the side, rolled them & tapped them in with a rubber mallet until I found the offending tips....(first outer passenger , the the inner went about 2 weeks later). They are hanging in there *pretty much invisible* until I pick up a new muffler this winter. With my method, if there wasn't enough tension on the metal, the tubes would either get sucked into the muffer (PITA) or blown out the back. I went through about 4 before I got it right.

Just buy some stainless sheet metal and make squares about 4" on a side. Roll them around a broom handle and stuff them in there. The tension holds them. I have a set in the Mondial...been in there 2 years+ and no problems. I hated that chirping sound!

Want to make them and I'll pay you for them? I dont have any metal working tools, and if the price is right, I'll buy a "full set" (i.e. 4, one for each outlet).

Another thing to add to the Birdman collection...... Birdman's Anti-Chirp Tubes ......

    FastJon,

I'm glad those inserts worked out for you -- you definitely don't want pigeons, your 5th grade PE teacher, and crickets using your Ferrari as a karoke club!

    Check 6.

There was another thread about this a while back. I think it was titled either chirping noise or exhuast chirping?

    James,
I knew someone would suggets this. We should get Verell in on it. The problem is that I do not have the proper tools to cleanly cut the sheet metal and make them look professionally made. It's one thing to use a pair of metal shears and make a set for myself, but another thing to do a nice looking production run of them! I'll have to do a little research.

OK, I am talking with a sheet metal place to make me a run of them, so I don't have to do the cutting. Stand by.

Thanks, but I'll wait for Birdman or Verrell. First, I'll help other FChatters :) and second, Stebro has had some negative reviews here on FChat and while they may be a great company and make a great product, I'd rather not chance it.

I'm trying to figure out what this sound is. I don't have this chirping, crickety sound at all on my car. Either before or after I changed my muffler. The pidgeon sound ...are you refering to the "cooing" sound and is this a unique sound that happens to most 328's or 308's or just the odd car occaisionally?

Yes, almost exactly. The factory exhaust on the 308 QV and Mondial (perhaps the 2Vi 308 as well, not sure) is known for it. The exhaust tips are lined with a perforated metal mesh that whistles at higher RPM. The first time I heard it in our Mondial, it sounded a little like a slipping (squealing) belt from the driver's seat. Very annoying. I put the inserts in and it went away. Much improved sound! A couple years ago there was a guy on eBay selling them for what I thought was an outrageous amount of money for what it is, but I bought the kit because it was the fastest way to be done with the sound.

I am looking into buying the stainless sheet metal pre-cut to the right size and then I will roll them in a sheet metal roller to make them easy to insert into the exhaust tips. I hope to have an idea of prices next week. I don't imagine there is a huge demand for this so I'm not going to stock up on a thousand units or anything...so they won't be dirt cheap....but pretty cheap I would think. Now that I am looking into the cost of the metal and the effort to roll it and ship it....I don't think the price I paid was actually that bad.

Does anyone have a file they can post of the sound?

They are designed specifically for the Stebro exhausts, and will definitely not work on a stock exhaust.

Here's a post with an mp3 taken from my car before "de-chirping".

I'm now using the stainless steel inserts and they work great. See the linked thread for all of the fabrication instructions. It took 1 trip to a metal shop or Home Depot + about 1 hour of work. Piece of cake for the benefit it has.

I've heard what I thought was a belt chirp or whistle when running at low speeds in tight alleys or parking garages where there was a lot of echo. I have a Tubi exhasut, will the same fix apply?

I dont think so, but I'll let someone with a Tubi reply. From my understanding (from what was posted above), its the OEM muffler that has little holes in the tubes that cause the VW sound. Being a german/VW/Porsche fan, I've seen those exhaust tubes and the they do look alot like the 4 outlets on my QV, so it makes sense that its the holes that make the sound.

I do not know if the Tubis have the same holes in the tubes, but I dont think so.

On the 308, the chirp comes from two sources: The exhaust tips and the smog pump plumbing. Since you have a "1998 328 GTS" (you might fix your profile there...) it can't be the smog pump so I can only guess that there's some mesh somewhere in your exhaust system but I don't know what Tubi tips look like.

with my Mondial. I purchased the inserts at Ferrari of New England, for about $100.00 - I think - and they took care of the problem.
It sounds like a chirping high pitched whistle noise. I think I posted a few years ago on this. Search for Banchee.

I know how hard it is to find the inserts, and to correct where I got mine from- it is currently Silicon Valley AUto Group in Los Gatos, California. It used to be the Ferrari dealership but now they sell Rolls, Bents, lambs', astons and lotus. I don't know how many are left from the old days, but perhaps a random box. In fact, the item on the invoice says Inserts Lost 308/ mond/ 3. There website is www.svagparts.com. Also, after using them for a week I love it.

Thanks for that mp3 of your exhaust sound. Interesting sound and I am sure glad it never came on my 86 GTB even when I had the OEM muffler setup.
