Hello: 1984 Mondial Coupe with Tubi Exhaust. No cats. When I had my car serviced a few months ago (timing belt change, etc.) I asked the mechanic to go over the car and give me a list of issues he found. One of those is an "exhaust leak." I was so excited to get my car back that I failed to ask him more information regarding the note on the work order. I'll ask next time I take the car in, which is later this spring, but I'm got to wondering yesterday about the ramifications of an exhaust leak. Since the engine is in the rear, I suspect that I don't have to worry about the exhaust gasses making their way into the cabin. Also, I can't imagine how an exhaust leak can damage the engine. So is this something I can wait on until the car is serviced next in a couple of months? How do I go about finding the leak myself? Simply crawl up under the car and look for exhaust gasses? User a LASER pointer? Thanks. --Jeremy
Oh, not to rub it in, but the weather here in Texas was beautiful over the weekend. I had so much fun driving the car that I'm still grinning. Mondials are so underrated.
You're correct, in that there are not many places it CAN leak, check the head studs and gaskets there, and at the tri flange where the headers meet the muffler. You can also lose a plug off the sampling ports, it makes the same noise.... HTH
