When I bought my 575SA the dealer said it had a sports exhaust. It is however a standard model (not FHP or hGTC). Wondering how I can tell if the rear mufflers are standard?
They are elliptical in shape (300mm dia at max width) and 250mm long.
I have searched the forum about exhausts but am wondering about whether to upgrade to a sports exhaust with or without valves? and if there are suggestions on which brands for passionate sound without the "boom sound" while crusing?

"Sports exhaust" is often a euphanism for Tubi exhausts, the most common aftermarket exhaust for Maranellos/Superamericas. FHP has no exhaust associated with it, but HGTC does and I have a Superamerica HGTC exhaust on my 575M. All the OEM exhausts on Maranellos/ Superamericas have pneumatic valves on the inside pair of exhaust pipes, easily visible looking at the rear of the car. When warm on 575s, open at idle, closed at 1000 rpm, reopen at 64% throttle and ~2700 rpm.

Standard SA exhausts have four ~72 mm tailpipes and the inboard valves noted above.

That sounds like a very strange aftermarket exhaust or perhaps just aftermarket tailpipes. Post a photo or two and maybe we can help you identify what you have.

For aftermarket exhausts, I like the valved Capristo, Novitec, and Kreissieg sysems. Lowest pitch comes from 4 90 mm tailpipes on the Novitec, medium pitch from the Capristo, and highest F1-like pitch from the Kreissieg.

    Many threads on Maranello/Superamerica exhausts.

Thanks Taz (also for the picks in the "serial number" post)...I got out a can of polish and found a name on the exhausts "Mille Miglia" and have found their site on the web. Anyone have comparative experiences with other brands compared to these sounds? These are not valved.
Also tried uploading pics and that was successful to the uploaded stage but couldn't find the "Attachment Icon" when replying to this thread? Sorry newbie here?

Incidentally, this is an OEM 575M/SA exhaust. Note the muffler can extends all the way to the connector. Aftermarket exhausts are generally shorter and have a pipe extension between the muffler and the connector. This set is on E-Bay for $400.

The photo Barry posted looks like a good aftermarket exhaust without valves.

    Terry,

That's the Mille Miglia 550/575 muffler. I hope you're still keeping a look-out for a set of valved Novitecs (or similar) for me.

I'm glad you posted those pictures of the OEM 550 mufflers. My tech tells me he can modify non-valved mufflers and add valves easily enough. He does some pretty nice welding, evident on the straight pipes he made for me. So that opens up a wider selection of mufflers to consider.

Barry- Affirmative. I gave away a set of OEM mufflers and this set is only $400 and the seller has two sets and would probably take less. The valves are $1000+ each new.

I am keeping my eyes open, but about the only hope is if someone sells the car, puts on the OEM exhaust and sells the other system. Maybe you will get lucky.

Did you check with Daniel and see if Larini makes a valved system? He is offering a good deal to someone so he can get photos and tapes.

    Terry,

A nice set of used mufflers would be ideal like Novitec, Capristo, Mille Miglia, etc. My tech can weld in the valve assemblies. A set of 400 dollar OEM 550 mufflers on eBay would be an excellent source for the bypass valve assemblies.

And, Terry, when I do all this, that would be a great time for me to replace my old bent cut-up unpainted screens with the new ones you found for me on eBay last year.

    ;)

    Barry

ps...I wish I knew about all this when you were selling your Novitecs

I heard that 575s have a resonator (pre-exhaust) and that removing it would increase the high and low pitch of the stock exhaust.
    1) Is this true?
    2) Has anyone tried this/ what did it sound like?
    3) Any negative repercussions, assuming the sound is ok

Doug- Early 575Ms (2002 and 2003 MY) have a central muffler/resonator that can be inexpensively replaced with straight pipes at any muffler shop for $400 or so. Ferrari did that on 575Ms from Assembly No. 51797 and also put slightly more restriced mufflers on to make up for the increase in noise. Earlier 575M OEM mufflers with straight pipes are an excellent compromise between exhaust note and quiet cruise. No need for X-Pipes on a V12, the straight pipes will actually give more hp and the sound is excellent. Because 575M pneumatic exhaust valves are open at idle, they sound great at a stoplight. 550 valves are closed at idle.

Barry- Valves on that particular Novitec system would have done no good. You could look straight through the muffler. The valves would not have done much to the sound, which was FXX loud. Parts catalog page from Ricambi's online catalog.

$795 for high quality prefabs is a good deal. Will not fit a 575M or Superamerica, though, just like OEM 575M straight pipes will not fit a 550. Right, Barry?

That's a great price for 550 straight pipes. Mine were made up the same way at Classic Coach (detail below). I would highly recommend Bradan's custom straight pipes.
