Been looking at the recent posts on the Nouvalari group buy and have read the multitude posts in the past that state how great a Capristo, Tubi, Goth or X-ost is (along with the sound clips). Keeping in mind that I have no intention of doing anything like a stage 2 or 3 Capristo (or similar) and I would more than likely retain my stock cats (or similar) my question is this: Since I own a '92 348 SS which already has the single can exhaust (OEM) what will I really gain by going to an aftermarket exhaust? Is there any substantial HP gain or is the sound really that much "better"?

I'm not by any means downplaying an exhaust upgrade, but 2500 - 4000 in parts alone needs a little justification.

I welcome any input on the subject - especially from any fellow SS owners who have done an upgrade.

    Regards,
    Matt

If there is any HP improvement it will be minimal. Most muffler changes on these only provide placebo HP. The sound change should be all you expect. There will be a slight weight savings too.

It really depends on the exhaust you choose. Look at it from a horsepower perspective. If you currently have 300hp and gain 15hp its not that noticeable. If you gain 35hp, its very noticeable.

Some exhausts (Tubi for example) wont give you much more sound than a single can. A Kreissieg for example will give you much more sound.

Most muffler systems will give you better sound rather than HP, whereas cats will provide the power increase.

Weight savings would be the most significant advantage. Stock muff weighs around 35lbs. You could feel the difference on curvy roads of any savings-that's better than an increase in hp IMO.

I went from the OEM duel can to an OEM single can, Then to a Tubi and then installed high flow cats. If i had to do it over again id keep the OEM single can with the high flow cats. Replacing the stock cats made her sound better, She runs cooler and the engine bay stays alot cooler. . The little flange welded in the inlet side of the OEM cats seems to make the them run alot hotter. The Tubi sounds great but is just a little loud for my taste, Getting old i guess.

If you listen to my Supersport model , it will blow away your stock system and then some. The sound is what a Ferrrari should sound like in my opinion. listen to video's on Youtube or at www.nouvalari-usa

When Vince (vvasallo) and Ozzy (gothspeed) dyno'd Vince's car, if my memory serves me correct, they got an additional 12hp (+/-) to the wheels. Keep in mind Vince has an SS, and like yours, it came with a single can exhaust.

I had Oz-meister make me one of his exhausts also, along with some metal core free flow cats. LOVE IT! Haven't strapped mine to a dyno yet, but it's coming. The car does rev much easier, especially over 6500rpm.

Im not sure what they are. I bought them off ebay. They fit just like the oem cats and they flow much better. I actually picked up a set of new Hyperflows thinking i would change them over but the ebay cats work so well i never got around to it.

I had a Tubi on my first 348 (TS) --very loud (that car is now owned by another fchatter in the Boston area), and I have the Nouvalari Sport on my current 348 Spider, which replaced the factory single-can exhaust. There is a significant difference in sound between the Nouvalari Sport (it sounds fantastic!) and the stock single-can exhaust at higher RPMs, but not much at idle. There is not (IMO) a noticeable difference in power, but the engine seems to "breath" easier than it did with the stock can (I am also using a K&N filter, which I imagine helps in that area too).

Side note: I am no longer running aftermarket "cats" due to failed emissions testing. With the "illegal" cats, the car was louder and more throaty sounding at idle, and slightly louder at speed. However, the "wail" at WOT is higher-pitched with the stock cats.
