I'm buying an exhaust system for my 300zx Twin Turbo and I can't decide whether or not to get resonators. The resonators are designed to lower the volume of the exhaust. I was trying to decide whether or not the exhaust will be too quiet with the resonators and I suddenly had an epiphany.

I thought: "Why not just compare the volume to that of a Ferrari?"

Anyway, the approximate decibel level of the exhaust with resonators is 93 db @ 4800 RPM. My question is this: do any of you guys/girls have information regarding the decibel level of various types of Ferraris? I just want a comparison on which to base my decision.

    Zach,

I think it is safe to say that for most of us here it probably isn't the sheer dBs that matter when picking an exhaust, its the way the exhaust sounds. Exhausts can be loud easily, but still sound annoying as hell. It is much much harder to get that tone that really sets the sound apart from everything else.

For me personally, if you can't hear the person talking at a normal level while you are cruising down the interstate, then the exhaust is too loud.

I would say, try the exhaust without the resonators for a while, if you decide you like it the way it is, great. If not, you can always install the resonators later.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it.

I do realize tone is MUCH more important than decibel level. I love the tone of the exhaust I have chosen (Labree for you Z enthusiasts out there), but can't quite decide on what volume level would be most appropriate. I hope that makes some sense. The "sound" of the chosen exhaust is awesome, it's just the volume level I am worried about.

I hope my question did not make me come off as a "ricer."

Like I said, would it be possible (and/or practical) to try it without the resonators first for a while? If it is too loud for you, then you can put the resonators on like a week later or something. If not, you won't waste your money getting the resonators when you don't really need em.

it may end up costing extra because of the more time it will spend in the shop (if you don't do it yourself), but I think it may be the best way to go.

I am glad you like the tone. Good luck with the new sound.

neither way will it be truly loud. turbos quiet down the engine alot. You'll get more rasp w/o the resonators though. Neither option will be too loud

If I buy it w/o the resonators first and decide to add them later, it will cost me $275 more than it would have to get them in the first place. The reason being, the resonators are built into the X-pipe and, to my knowledge, cannot just be added on to an x-pipe which was not built with them. In order to add resonators, I would need to buy a new X-pipe.

I suppose the best solution would be find someone in my area who has the exhaust and just go have a listen.

Anyway, thanks for your insight into the situation. I appreciate it.

PS: If anyone's interested, here is a link to the exhaust I am interested in.

Ok, that was the part I wasn't sure about. What you suggested would be the best thing to do at this point if you can. Kinda sucks how you can't just add the resonators later, but oh well. Good luck with everything.

Hi, Zach. That's a nice looking exhaust.

Resonators will generally remove the rasp, or rap, that the younger kids seems to like. They can filter out high-frequency soundwaves without necessarily lowering the decible level. Personally, I'd go with the resonators.
