In a recent post in the Spotter's Thread aw555 postulated that the 360 he saw had a stock exhaust thus was "too quiet". Being old school, generally a fan of leaving the cars as Ferrari intended, I am interested in the general repsonse to the comment. Is louder better?

My car is a '72 C4 which has an Ansa system, stock for the model. Over the years the baffles in the mufflers (there are 4) disintegrated to the point that last year I was in effect driving around with straight pipes. I had many comments about "how great" the car sounded, but to me the noise was very loud. Fun for a short drive but I had to use ear plugs on distance runs, not very safe and annoying. Also I could not carry on a conversation with a passenger. I had the mufflers rebuilt @ Timevalve and this summer the decibel level is much more user friendly - but still has the legendary C4 growl.

I know many folks immediately rush out and mount Tubis, Capristos, etc., on their new Ferraris. Do they really enhance the driving experience, or just make it louder. To my mind in this region loud is not necessarily good because it often arttracts unwanted attention. I accept that sometimes the retrofit results in more HP, but not always.

    Hi Sam,

I am not a fan of aftermarket exhausts. If people like them and want them for their own cars well then thats their choice. I have a stock exhaust on my car and for me its the right balance of enjoying the sound of a Ferrari without seeming rediculously loud.

I think there are some aftermarket exhausts that are reasonable and enhance the sound of a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maser, Porsche, etc. However, some distort the sounds so the cars don't even sound good, or so that they sould almost like a caricature of an exotic car. On the practical side, as you suggested really loud aftermarket exhausts can attract unwanted attention and/or make a car too loud to enjoy on longer drives.

Sure there are some claims of ligher exhausts and added HP when using some aftermarket exhausts. However, if someone really wants to extract the most they can from one of these cars they should go to a proper driving school.

BTW, I saw your GTC/4 this past weekend going over the Sakonett Bridge going north on Rt 24. The car looked great !
    Best regards,
    Dino

I think you may have misinterpreted me! I'm not suggesting that ever Ferrari needs custom exhaust, i.e. F430, 458, Scuderia, Enzo, 599, etc. are all very loud and amazing sounding cars! I think the 360 is definitely way too quiet, I mean my Jeep Wrangler was louder! I just think Ferrari's should be audible, any car that isn't a sports car should be quiet. The 575/550 and the 360 are just too quiet for Ferraris! I still love both cars but in a Ferrari, the louder the better.

    great idea for a thread!

I love the sound of my 308 with the ANSA and once it's time, I will have it replaced/rebuilt as how I found it.

My wife and I taking the long route back to Providence after spending the day running Ocean Drive and having lunch on the Newport waterfront. She had not spent any time in the car for about a year and I wanted her to see/feel the improvements made over the winter. Interesting, she said she liked the highway portions better than the twisty back roads. Guess I have more work to do!

Understand Alex- personal taste. Now what you have to do take a run behind a C4 hitting 6-7,000 rpm in third........now that's how Enzo wanted a Ferrari to sound!

A Ferrari without an exhaust sound pathetic ...nothing sexy or exotic about it ...that why Tubi is so popular and on most cars .

It's not about loud its about not sounding like a Toyota . Geez, Mustang Gt sounds bigger from the factory ...

It boggles my mind why you guys feel the way the factory made it is the best way . if didn't have regulations to follow I bet things would be a lot different . that's why the specialty cars sounds so good ie Scuderia, Stradale etc

no the GTC-4 is one of my favorite sounding Ferrari's! I heard yours at Aston Martin of New England when I was recording the SLS. I was surprised at how loud and how good the sound was! besides, I would never put custom exhaust on a classic Ferrari, that's not something I would wanna mess with lol

My 360 came with the stock exhaust. It was far too mellow and didnt make "music". I went with a sport TUBI and now its a symphony! Night and day. Not TOO loud, but JUST right. Its awesome, and all my friends agree!

Ok, get the rope out and hang me. Frankly what my F cars sounds like has little to do with enhancing the driving experience. I guess I' m just an old fart (got my Medicare card yesterday) but after 26 years of ownership I don't take my 308 out unless I plan of putting a couple of hundred miles on it. After the first 50 I rather the car sound more like my Z4. In the driveway sure it sounds great to rev it, but on a long day of touring NE with the woman I'd rather it be a little mellower.
