In a quest to clean up the look of the stock exhaust tips, does anyone have a suggestion to bring back a shine, or, has anyone tried replacing them with:

I use an old tube of Semi Chrome metal polish and they shine like new. Any good metal polish and some elbow grease should do the job. Fine steel wool couldn't hurt.

+1 ......... a good polish would work and if it is too hard by hand ........ get a polishing attachement for your electric drill :)!

+!. Semi-Chrome and a long, thin flannel cotton strip works great. Apply a thin coat of Semi-Chrome to the tip. Wrap the cloth around the tip several times and pull back-and-forth on the cloth ends (like your polishing a shoe). Repeat as many times as necessary.

I've got those silly things in my stock, but its hard to take good picture because they're shiny. I'll give it a whirl in a few moments.

Thanks Dan, I'll try to clean them up first based on these suggestions and if it just doesn't do it for me, then I'll put in the silly order. I just think it would look nice to see them polished. I put in the "ultimate pedal" set and am looking for a polished shift ball as well. A little bit of gleam here and there :)

Check out the Hill Engineering shift ball versions available through Ricambi. I find their products to be better quality than those manufactured by Ultimate Pedals.

Okay, 4 or 5 of the metal polishes didn't do much to improve the discoloration of the exhaust tips. They looked as though they had never been cleaned in the last 13 years and not balck as much as a "bronze" sort of oxidation with a bit of carbon buildup on the inside of the tip rings. Rather than add the sleeves (although mcuh less time involved) I broke out the six or so grades of emory cloth figuring that if it screwed it up I could always go the sleeve route instead. I've done three of the four so far and while not totally gleaming and reflective they look so much better than before. As we've said in past posting, cost $0.00 - priceless. I left one original so I could post a picture which I'll do soon.

The photo isn't great, hard to capture reflections but.. the bronze look is gone and there is now a shine. It was a matter of medium-fine-very fine-ultra fine emory cloth. I suppose I could have gone further with polishing compound but this was enough. One bit of advice though is that instead of working it like shoe shine (left-right moving) which leaves grooves moving in and out did a much better job. Didn't really take that long but it looks much cleaner. Could have spent $250 and bolted them on but nah...
