One of the first things I'm going to do on my car is going to be to add the high-flo cats from Fabspeed and upgrade the back end exhaust for better sound. I've read all the debates back and forth on brand/etc and realize it's all on preference. But I'm wondering where the best place to buy the parts? I didn't know if there's a certain vendor we may get a better discount from over another? It's an '84 308 GTSi QV. Sugestions on vendors?

    Cheers
    Dave

There are exhaust shops all over the country making custom exhausts, some capable of beautifully made and really good quality done for far less than one of the common aftermarket systems sold. Especially in a 308 where it cannot be seen, thats what Id do.

Is there any improvement that can be made with the stock header arrangement on an 84 QV or is the factory design as good as it can possibly be, as is, on an otherwise stock motor?

They can be improved upon but not enough to be worth the money in my opinion. A muffler will not be a performance improvement either. There is no question the car can be made to sound better. The exhausts the US and Swiss cars got sound too much like Honda generators

I recently put a Nuvolari on my '81 GTSi, they were great to work with, it arrived from the UK quickly and I like the sound. Didn't go full sport but its a little louder than stock but much better tone.

I kind of like the sound of the exhaust on my stock 85 QV. It's got a low rumble too it. Frankly I like it better than the Tubi on my 355 spider. Yes, they are totally different, but the high pitch of the Tubi hurts my ears. Tinnitus, you know. :(

There are a million muffler shops fabricating systems. I have seen some very nice ones but never looked to have one made.

Loud does not = good sound. Have not liked the sound of stock Ferrari US systems from the early 70s to the early 90's. Never wanted any of the aftermarket systems. All too loud. I had loud cars when I was young and my driving record read like the vehicle code. Magically when I got good mufflers I quit getting tickets and I dont drive any different now than when I was 20.

Not only that but I have no need for noise.

I've thought the stock 2v and 4v headers weren't at all that bad, pretty good actually, same goes for the mufflers. The only real improvement would be in a highly built motor demanding larger exhaust ports thus larger equal length primary pipes etc.

Unless you have a Euro….or Diaper Delete Option. :p
Also second RD’s reco for custom exhaust. Haven’t done it to the 308 yet, but had one designed and installed on my - don’t laugh - Vanagon a few years ago and ended up with a system that had perfect tone and volume, didn’t cost an arm and a leg, yet would set-off car alarms when I drove past. :D
    Best of all worlds.

This was from a few years ago, GoPro camera inside with internal mic, and a GoPro on the rear panel with an external mic by the license plate. Please excuse the cheesy GoPro music at the start.

Car is my 1984 Euro 308 GTS QV, no cats on Euro cars, Tubi headers, Tubi Euro standard muffler.

What size rims are you running? 17" or 18"? Did you lower the car as well? Looks great!

I removed the diaper in the back and took a few pics. Any idea what this system is? I have a bunch of receipts with the car, but nothing shows what brand this system is. The cat is obviously aftermarket, but not sure the kind. And forgive the ineptness of this statement, but it appears as if the routing of the headers/manifolds come to a "Y" and join each other in the back right side of the car which then turn towards the driver's side where the single cat resides, which then turns back into the muffler. So, this is a single cat system.

It doesn't sound too bad, but I would like a little more growl. Any thoughts on the brand of cat/muffler this may be? It looks fairly new too yet the connections are pretty tired. I did notice on the cat that the O2 bung is plugged and pointing down as is the thermocouple sensor. I think this needs to be rotated up so moister doesn't collect. Kind of a hokey-assembled system that needs an upgrade!

Vehicle again is a 1984 308 GTSi US version

    Cheers
    Dave

That would be "moisture" (thanks auto-incorrect). But interesting reading on a search about the O2 sensor being disconnected from most of these 308s. Regardless, I'm curious on the brand of exhaust this might be and cat too!
