Hello Everyone, As I continue on the path toward a 612, I wanted to ask for some experiences and input from people who have experience with higher mileage cars. I'm talking 50k plus cars. I do intend on driving mine eventually quite a bit and would like to know what to expect. As with any car, I'm going to guess that frequent use is far better than a car sitting in a garage for extended periods of time. I do have a good relationship with an independent mechanic that works on these cars and I have overall great experience with high mileage rare cars. Still, I would welcome any feedback. I do plan on getting the best car that I can with the least miles, but I will not shy away from a high mileage car that was properly cared for (in a similar way that I would). Thank you!
The engine is a very close relative of that in the 575 and they really seem to need 50 000 miles plus to give of their best
They definitely get better with miles. I’m close to 40k miles and it keeps on getting better and faster [emoji16] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In the Netherlands there is a 612 for sale with 194.000km (120k miles) I don't know anything about this car but it is nice to see the car is used where it was made for: driving! Verstuurd vanaf mijn G3121 met Tapatalk
I would consider every car which is regularly driven better than one who sits in a garage, of course provided its not driven in snow or often in rain. This also applies to Ferraris. The difference might be how it is used, if you push a 612 constantly to the limit this might affect some parts greater than in a „normal“ car, allthough the car is build for that. But driving at high speed and braking from high speed is producing more wear and tear than in a slower car. As a result it is important that a high mileage 612 has a proper service documentation, had regular oil changes, brakes, clutch, tires of course, but also suspension parts such as bushes and others will need to get changed. I am driving my 612 around 5.000 miles per year, and that for many years. It is now 14 years old and has 50.000 mls on the clock and it looks and drives like new. Yet it is serviced every year, stays in a garage, and used only in summer and normally only on sunny days. Since I am often in Germany I am also driving it hard, sometimes close to 200mls per hour without fear and I believe its good for the car too. Its not made for the track though as this is really hurting because of its weight, specially the brakes will wear a lot (and mine even has carbon fiber brakes). Another topic is the sticky stuff (a lot of threads in this community), which will be a topic for most Ferraris after 10 to 15 years, maybe much earlier when located in a hot country. This is a given, can be repaired but is costly. Paint maybe an issue as well, depending how the car was treated, same with the windscreen. In summary I would recommend a higher mileage car for those who like to drive it, keep it and not speculate with it. You will get it cheaper and depretiation is not a topic anymore, but maintainance isn‘t cheap and crashing it is also an expensive experience. But in general I think the 612 is a very robust car. Cheers Stefan
absolutely no reason to shy away from a car with miles - especially if it had a documented service history. if you plan on driving it alot there is no reason to buy a low mile car other than you enjoy burning money!
My 612 has 42,xxx on it and runs/drives fine. Changing the belts now and just put on a new water pump for preventive care. Won a Platinum at the local Concorso. I bought it with limited service records and it needed a new clutch which was done as part of the purchase. For the price I paid it was a very good deal and justified the work that needed to be done. With 42,xxx miles it still averages under 3,500 miles per year. Anything less than that and the car is sitting too much.
A high mileage 599 or 612 is almost certain to have lots of highway miles, and those are pretty easy on the car.
This is excellent to hear, thank you. I remember the distinct feeling of loving a car and not wanting to drive it because it would put miles on it, which would lead to issues but it does not look like this is the case with this car.
If you're going to keep it for a long time and enjoy it, higher mileage cars are the best. Just remember to get a good price when buying because a high mileage Ferrari is much harder to sell. From what I see, pretty much anything over 25-30k miles is considered "high".
It's a GT car, so its more comfortable to drive for three hours at a wack then say a serious sports car. I'm looking forward to a drive to upstate NY at the end of the month, approx 3.5 hours one way. I will put about 500 miles on her for the weekend and will enjoy every mile of it.
That is precisely what I'm looking for. A car to do long stints in. I've experienced the super-focused sports car for the past 5 years (Lotus Exige) and, while fantastic when its in its element and I've put 300+ miles in a single day, a 612 is what I'll be looking into next. A 456 was also an option but, unfortunately, I do not fit in it very well.
I want to take my 612 from the northwest across the country to New England, maybe even next summer. I'm thinking I will drive it over there in about a week, leave it for a couple of weeks, and then come back and do the fall colors. Then leave it for a while again, and bring it back across the country in the spring. At least that's what I'm hoping to do, if I can get the wife to agree to at least part of it.
