Has anyone had any experience with this unit on a stock 328? Seems like a better and cheaper alternative to the OEM replacement unit. I'm not there yet but I'm thinking about it for my next major, just to be safe, along with his replacement water pump and possibly a radiator.

Why are you considering Nick's damper over the stock unit?

The stock OEM harmonic balancer has a steel ring outside the hub that is mounted in rubber. It operates by slightly rotating back and forth out of phase with engine power pulses. Its primary purpose is to keep the crankshaft from breaking. I do not beleive the aftermarket part offers any harmonic offset, its just a pully. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. In any case, no one has reported thier crank snapping by running aftermarket, and many postulate that OEM manufactures go overkill on them just to be safe, Ferrari as well perhaps, but thats the story in a nutshell.

I'm pretty sure Nick's unit is a silicone fluid type damper and should be at least as effective as the stock unit I would think. The plus is that it's lighter and some people get excited about that, I personally don't. I keep going back and forth on whether or not to fit something similar to my v12 to replace the very long and kind of in the way of the gas tank stock unit.

it's a mechanical unit in that it has a two metal rings supported by spring tension and kevlar brake material for friction to counter the imbalance. I have one on mine for well over 30k and ZERO problems.

the water pump will work, you'll need a different sized belt though.

one thing I'm tempted to try is removing the balancer altogether as 348 and forward motors do not use one. I've heard that some of the 3x8 race motors did not use them, not 100% sure on it but why drop it on the 348?

I am currently balancing and blue printing two, 2V, short blocks from the earlier 80's.
    Remember a Good pocket calculator was $ 200.00!!! (Ti55)
The build quality is basically not there at all.
Thus, I believe the earlier motore' needed a harmonic balancer as a band aid.

I am getting New, aluminum pullys made for both of my 2V's,
I have an extra for sale?
    (Gold anodized)

The 348 motor is built in the age of advanced CNC machinery,,
thus, no harmonic balancer is needed.
    :)

The 348 used the grease filled flywheel which should act like a damper, but that doesn't explain 355 and up.

    Bump,

I'm going to put this on my 9.8:1
    2V motor.
(After a thorough blueprinting and balance.)

    It weighs just 1.3 lbs.
    I’ll keep you guys posted.
