Heres something i did on a whim... didnt work out entirely the way i had planned though...

A large work: (40" wide) Red watercolour splashed randomly on board followed by the high contrast ink artwork of Stroll's P4 i shot at the Toronto Car Show last Feburary.

What DIDNT work was that the red dried too light, kinda pink actually.
I decided to quickly finish the drawing anyways - a bit faster than i would have liked if Step 1 had worked... but it was learning experience for next time.

Anyways, what resulted i shot with my camera and corrected the colour to closer to what i had in mind. From the looks of this, i will definitly give it another go after some experimenting with different paints and different reds. (Kinda stupid of me not to try out the red colour i had mixed first to check it... live and learn...)

The look is little removed from what i usually do, but i like trying different things sometimes...

You have no idea how I'd love for that to hang on my wall. When I opened this thread my jaw just dropped... seriously. This is absolutely... absolutely.... ehhh.. no words to decribe it! One of the best Ferrari art pieces I've seen.

If you have any other (similar?) work, pls post or maybe an internet gallery?

EDIT - OK, I've just found your site from your profile... loving it ;) Could you send a higher res version by mail? [email protected]

I love it! It's really cool. I like the modern flare. It's casual and...hell, I just love it.

got your message and sent it again... thx
    Yay... :)
didnt plan on the streaks... but when you're standing on a ladder throwing paint you can't control a whole lot... :)
What i DID consider luck is how they ended up running perpendicular to the angle the car is on... kinda liked that... however, if i had my way they would run in perpective with the car.
    Dang gravity...

As for the next try... count on it.. if it works out, i'll post it...

The drawings and paintings you normally do are amazing, but this one is even more amazing. I love the way you took the "old" Ferrari drawing and gave it an interesting twist. I also love the thicker lines on the car, it almost seems as if it's jumping off the canvas/page. You said that that was 40 inches right? Any chance of a smaller one that could be sold? I definetly want to see how the next one turns out.

    Hi Grant,
Wow! Nice piece! The P4 has always been one of my favorites.

What really catches my interest is that we could make a steel sculpture out of it...

All of the lines are heavy and connected, making it a natural for plasma-cutting the car out of steel. The cut steel could be hung or attached to a frame in front of a canvas with the red splash behind it, giving it a 3D effect. The steel could be painted black, or blued using gun blueing (which I use on my Ferrari horses) and you could even add some red onto the steel to match the splash behind if you wanted to.

Would you be interested in expanding your medium into cut steel? My plasma cutter has about a 4 ft x 5 ft work area, so a 40" piece wouldn't be a problem. You could also scale it to other sizes if you wanted to, since I use a CAD file to run the torch from. Since you're experimenting already...

Here's my webpage with my current projects on it, mostly car logos right now. I'll have four more logos up by the end of the week, some airbrushed. I'm updating the page this week, so it's under construction and has a lot of pieces missing. I hadn't intended on letting anyone know anything until next week, but I just HAD to approach you on this idea!

Let me know what you think.

I am looking into different red paints - something in a large volume (watercolours dont cut it....) - that can retain the intensity but be thin enough to get the effect i want. I will be doing smaller ones as a test.. if they are successful... i'll post them here and you can see for yourself what you think...
    keeping my fingers crossed....

gosh... these uncharted waters are kinda exciting...

    GT
thanx for the kind comments... the P4 is quite a beast to witness... more curves than B. Spears. (Maybe some of the same materials... )

Wonderful work you do!! Very impressive & unique!!!
the most high-tech piece of equipment i have is a rather stubborn airbrush. You have a plasma-cutter. You win... :)
Sounds like an exciting idea... once i get the basics figured out with this new medium, this could be a path i might go down. The red, as you say, on canvas and then if there was a way to raise the metal P4 off the surface an inch to get a shadow, adding some "3d-ness" to it...
hmmmm... the creative juices are really flowing now...

by the way... is your CAD co-operative with Adobe Illustrator? If the black P4 was redrawn as as Illustrator file could your system read and size it?

Thanks for the compliments, very appreciated!

Yes, I was thinking of raising the P4 up off the surface about an inch. I would add a 1 to 2" frame to the metal, cut it out, then construct a wood picture box behind it about an inch deep with the signed and numbered red splash mounted inside. We could even put in a piece of glass in front of or behind the metal. Behind it would be easier, since I could route a groove into the sides of the picture box to hold the glass. How does that sound?

I can use either an Adobe Illustrator file or anything else for that matter. I have a piece of software that can find and mark the edges of a jpeg or bitmap, then convert the edges into a CAD file if I need to. I usually have to do some cleanup of the CAD file, but that's expected. Once it's a CAD file I can resize it quite easily.

Interested in doing a signed and numbered series? I don't know quite how we'd market it, but I'm sure we could come up with something.

I do this for fun and to help pay for all the repairs I've made to my Mondial over the last year. So far, I've got about half of the body work and repairs paid for. GRIN

Just another thought... We could add a light to the inside of the picture box up under the frame to back-light it if you wanted to. That might look cool.

Wow.. this thing is getting really interesting.. you never know where this will take one... thanks for the input into the idea Thor.. backlighting, sounds cool. Not sure where you are located, what would shipping to Canada (Toronto area) be?

On a seperate tangent... played around with illustrator with it.. heres P4 by way of Warhol..

    Hey, Nice Warhol!

I'm in Idaho, and shipping generally runs about $30 for a larger one of my pieces, the 36" ones, to get one to you. They're kind of heavy. If we do this, it would be cheaper to ship direct to the customer from me, since my end would be the heavy part. Larger dimensions also invoke extra shipping charges. It would be a good idea to figure out where the extra kicks in and make the pieces just a bit smaller than that. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Have you got a file I can use to make a prototype pattern from? I can draft it up with a frame, scale it, and cut one out as a pattern test about 36" wide. I think you'll really like it once you see it.

Grant, I've said it a few times now: you need to get your heinie in gear and start selling litho prints, T-shirts, maybe even posters of your work and quit your "day job!!!"

If I had your talent, I would not work for someone else.

a little try I had with an old b/w photo... One thing I like to konw is how did you get your first drawing to look like a pen drawing, did you draw it or did you use a program?

That looks nice, how did you get the photo to look like that (sort of an outline)?

I was wondering how you do that too, because the P4 just looks amazing.
