Just on the news massive fertilizer plant explosion. Hope everyone is okay. Looks very bad. Posted from Ferrarichat.com App for Android
Ugh. Those type of explosions are massive. From what I've gathered, nursing home & other facilities are too close for comfort. Football Field is being used as what I hope is temporary shelter? via rubber ducky
Fires have been burning for 2 hours, est 70+ deaths, massive toxic cloud drifting north towards D/FW. Posted from Ferrarichat.com App for Android
I would guess that several people are doing some radius of exposure type of calculations to determine potential impact. I would expect that any dispersion model will demonstrate that the impact of a toxic cloud in a situation like this would not be significant on any major population area. As I am sure you know, we are expecting a significant weather event tonight that will shift the winds from the north/northwest. Not sure how that will change things, but we will soon know the answer. Horrible situation.
This has been a though week for all of us, my thoughts and prayers for the victims of the explosion in West.
Very sad. Prayers to everyone. I heard an apt complex near the plant was leveled. I hope I'm wrong but I think the death toll will climb.
The USGS in Amarillo said the explosion registered as a 2.1 magnitude earthquake. I definitely felt it, and I've heard people as far away as Arlington and Mesquite felt it too.
DF/R Cpt. Kenny Harris is among the dead...he was killed when a firetruck landed on him. Horrible. Everyone is saying 5-15 people have been killed but DPS won't give an exact number.
Just got word that family friends were visiting Grandma in West, from the Metroplex. Grandma lived across the street from the plant. I say lived in the past tense because the house is a total loss. Walls caved in, roof collapsed, our friends & their kids were all inside the house, injuries were mostly glass schrapnel and the kids eyes are being treated for symptoms of chemical exposure. Everyone survived but shaken, obviously.
New numbers have trickled out...the DPS has confirmed 14 dead, and are now estimating around 200 people injured. 4 of the dead were firefighters fighting the initial fire. Horrible.
That's terrible. I hope for a speedy recovery for them, the rest of the victims, and for the city to rebuild and recover overall. This sounds like a horrible accident and my prayers go out to everyone.
For anyone heading down there to help, a friend of mine, Quincy Wallace from Fred's Texas has set up a mobile kitchen for volunteers & work crews in the parking lot of the VFW on south Reagan st.
Their house is at the bottom of the photo, directly caddycorner from the destroyed apartment complex and across the street from the ball field... Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's scary Dave. Thankfully they are okay. My mom told me one of the football coaches from my high school lost two first cousins and his sister lost her home, but she is okay.
Looks like things may be getting interesting... http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/11/us/west-tex-emt-faces-charges-of-having-bomb-parts.html?_r=0
They found him with components to a pipe bomb, namely chemicals used to make fertilizer? Wouldn't that make sense to find a person on the scene with fertilizer material if they were at a fertilizer plant?
