    Wow, this turned into a tempest in a pea-cup. I was kidding for the most part, folks. But I will say that the analogy with the Chinese and Americans is not quite exact. I was not commenting on what is considered polite or impolite, rather, the lack of logic in using the wrong side of the fork. See, one side is concave and can scoop things up. The other side is convex, and things slide and roll off that side, as you would expect.

    Let me try to put it another way. You can weave through traffic or drive at a sedate speed. But it is a rare individual who drives his car in reverse all the time.

    So, what's with scooping up peas using the backside of the fork? Forget manners. It just doesn't make sense.

    This is another case of some people over analyzing and missing the obvious. How about the brits just answer is question and move on? Why put peas on the convex side? NOT THAT hard. Then this thread everyone hates so much could have been over many posts back. God when will the easy fun times come back to Fchat..

    quite simple really, lets say you slice a piece of steak and push some mashed spuds on top of the steak, you then have some spud on the "wrong" side of the fork, same can be done with peas, pumpkin, carrots .... and so on.
    That is unless you just stick one flavour in you mouth at one time
    If peas were meant to be scooped, we'd give you a spoon

    I was referring to the politics and religion threads...not this one. :) I should have made that clearer.

    BTW, I have gotten loans using rental properties as collateral. That's strange that they didn't lend to you. And when I paid off those loans they weren't mentioned on my credit reprot either. I had forgotten about those! Banks suck.

    Obviously you need the meat or potatoes to hold the peas in place if they are on the backside of the fork. Unless you mash them into the fork, they're gonna roll off otherwise. Not asking how. Rather, why?

    Another thing I thought of. If you feed a child some peas, using a fork, which side do you use? I am sure it's the same side as us pea-brained Yanks. So, why change when you "grow up"?

    Yes, but if you're normal, the dummy gets replaced by something a bit more interesting. Does your technique stay the same, or do you suckle with your nose now?

    I have always wondered, why don't americans use knifes? They do it two ways, and I noticed it when we had an american kid living here when he was on some exhange thing..

    Either they cut all the meat with knife in the right hand, and then lay it down and picks up the fork with the right hand and eats with that only OR they use the fork to cut out the meat and eats with it too?? :)

    Is it so hard to have the knife in one hand and the fork in another and use them at the same time :D

    Dude, you're taking things a bit personally. Please calm down. The other thread was in jest. I am a huge Anglophile and usually go over every month. Sorry you can't see that. I will be in London this Thursday, in fact.

    This thread is somewhat serious and, it seems, relevant to quite a few people. We are talking about how easily credit blemishes appear on your record, yet how difficult it is to show responsible behaviour, even with substantial sums.

    Interesting, several people have told me about this. But I have never noticed it here in the US. I have only seen people eat with knife in one hand and fork in the other. Just like the Europeans.

    I for one don't like peas, whether scooped with the concave or convex part of the fork, peas just suck. I usually have to use silverware funny because I am a lefty, and you have to adapt as to not elbow the person next to you when eating. Luckily lefty's are the smartest 87% of the world, so we can figure out silverware(most of us anyway):) Just my .02
