The show is on Father's Day, from 10 to 4:30 on June 21, at the Edsel/Eleanor Ford home at 1100 Lakeshore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores. www.eyesondesigncarshow.com
My Giallo Fly 365 GT 2+2 was invited for the display, and the organizer said they expect about 200 cars in the show. Entry is $20 and is a benefit for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology.

I'm new, first post, love the site.

I went to the show this Sunday and loved it. Because it is focused on design, there is an eclectic groups of cars including tuners and customs. Some cars where unrestored and the theme related to advertising so next to each car was a reprint of an advertisement for the vehicle, including foreign language ads. Many cars match their advertisement exactly--remarkable.

I saw Jim's Ferrari, nice ride. I love the 2+2. You don't see many.

The other notable experience was my conversation with "the Sultan." I introduced myself to him to ask about his zr1 and he explained some of the modifications he made. After a bit a couple groups of people came up waiting to speak to him, so I mentioned that I didn't want to take any more of his time and that I wanted to grab a quick picture and then excuse myself. But after the picture he kept talking to me and my brother, when he could have been chumming it up with some guys who looked important.

My brother and I were really impressed. Here was a true gentleman and a down to earth auto enthusiast who would talk to a couple nobodys when he could have just answered a few questions and taken off. In fact, before I introduced myself, he was talking to someone else while he was standing in an inch or two of water (the grass was very soft in a few places).

I didn't know until later that he had one of the cleanest collections of true driving cars in Michigan if not the Western Hemisphere.

It was the highlight of my day.

As you can see, we got a red ribbon - Design of Distinction award (2nd place, class winner was a very nice XK-E). The ad is in English, using the same photos as used in the original multi-language sales brochure with the soft green car.

The most interesting guy I talked to was the owner of the Porsche 904/906. He bought the car in the late 1960s as a clapped out and unloved old race car, one well past its prime. It had lots of dings, several cracked places in the frame, and was basically "run hard and put away wet". He had to sell a late model 911 and take a bit from savings to afford the car, but he had loved that model since he saw it race. That particular car won an 82 hour enduro at the Nurnburgring (sp?) -- imagine 82 hours at THAT track. When he bought it, he could have had either engine, but paid a bit more to have both. It has been a "decent investment" with a purchase price of $6,000 and a current value north of $1 million. WOW, neat history.

It is a very eclectic show, I recommend it next year to everybody - either to display or just attend. There were some very rare cars including the Hudson Italia, a Bitter GT, a DKW convertible, and others.

    Regards,

    Jim Walker
