I cannot be the only person to have replaced his plug wires, extenders, and plugs, only to discover that the rubber boot covering the rear distributor is the most painful part of the entire process (i.e., there's no room to get to it, and getting it on and off is therefore a real PITA).

Question is this ... how important is is to keep the boots installed? Next question is has anybody come across a replacement boot that offers easy on/off properties?

I don't know how important the boots are especially if you don't drive in the rain. That said, I've had mine off (308) for several years and have driven in the rain, so far no problems.

I never had the boots on my car since I purchased it. There are pros and cons on them. If you drive in the rain you need them but if you drive in sunny weather then unless you are going to show the car you can leave them off.

No Ferrari experience with those, but the mid-1980's era Mustangs had those rubber boots on the distributor and it was a royal PITA to put those back on. And the distributor was in the FRONT of the engine! I can only imagine who much more difficult it is in a mid-engined car. Everyone Mustang that I know that removed that boot has had no ill-effects from removing it. As long as you don't douse your engine with water (e.g. degreasing the motor), you'll be fine IMO...
