whoa, look at the suspension travel!

All that near-priceless hardware landing on a short runway - wouldn't you want the transition from runway to runoff area smother, or failing that some sort deplyable arresting net?

If you look at him at the beginning of the video, he/she has their nose way up. They are using aero braking to slow down.....that's fine if you have a 10,000 ft runway, but probably not at Oshkosh. Brakes are a lot quicker at dissipating speed than air molecules. Oshkosh is probably not the place to "save" your brakes. I'm not sure how long that runway is, it's been 30 years since the last time I was at Oshkosh. Anyone?

We used aerobraking where possible (on loooong runways) to keep maintenance down by not using the brakes. I agree with Terry, no smoke when the brakes on the antiskid....just some vibration on the brake pedals.

We also had a saying in the Navy...."If you go off the runway, both tires had better be (f'in) blown" :)

Again, just my two cents worth, Dogdish

Wonder what happens after something like this - did the pilot pick up the phone and call his boss and say "I just ran the plane off the end of the runway"?

Guys, I re-read my post above, hope it didn't come across as harsh, as I didn't mean it to. just my guess as to what I saw on the video....all conjecture on my part.

I'd be surprised if it isn't scrapped...

The engine ingested massive amounts of soil... hard to imagine the engine isn't scrap...

The nose gear gave out and nose impacted hard enough to break of of the nose and plow a deep trough... that airframe received stresses it was almost certainly never designed for.

At best the plane will be converted to a target drone for a missile test...

The north-south runway at OSH, 18-36, is 8000 feet long, which should be long enough for any aircraft that would be operating there. Remember that the Concorde used to attend that show.

The Navy FJ-4 Fury (not Sabre) was adapted from the NA Sabre, is designed to land on a carrier.

The gear is MUCH stouter than the Sabre, and it has a lot more travel to absorb landing shock on a carrier.

BTW, that's the only operational FJ-4 in existence.

You have to wonder if the pilots are intentionally landing long to touch down in front of the crowds. At OSH during the show, the crowds are gathered around the P-2 taxiway which is almost 2/3rds down 36/18. In the F-16 overshoot, it looks like he was landing on 36 and touching down near where the crowds would be near P-2. Not an excuse for the overshoot, but perhaps it explains why the pilots left so much runway behind them.

Runway behind and altitude above....two things that are of no help to a pilot.

    I have 5 total hours on a 172 so someone better respect my opinion ( :) ) ...

It doesn't look like the plane (F-16) was slowing down after all wheels were on the ground. It looked to me like he just didn't apply the brakes or they failed.

    VERY!

That's the F-16's tail on the Left, the FJ-4 off in the center, and the Tow Vehicle on the Right. Ha.

It looked to me like he ran off the side, not the end of the runway. You come over the fence about 150 or so in a C model and aero brake to about 100 or so and roll out the rest until brakes are needed to make an intersection.

I can't imagine him going off the end, there was no hard braking going on because the nose would have compressed visibly had he done so. From what I can see on the videos (2 different angles) there seemed to be no evidence by his actions that indicated anything but a routine landing roll out.

If I thought I was about to go off the end, you can bet there would be some hot brakes. One of mine lost nose wheel steering upon touchdown and nearly went off the side; differential braking saved him and he's a part time crop duster pilot which never hurts.

Problem was the steering potentiometer went out; luckily he was slow at the time near the end of the rollout. Whew!

Evidently the video angle fooled me. I have it on good authority from someone who was there and saw it, that he did go off the end. Gotta go get my eyes checked now.
