Found this on Yahoo news. The F-35 programme is partly being blamed for the reduction in orders of the F-22. The only good thing here is that according to the article, VADM Dave Venlet is being put in charge of the project.

Us slightly older folks will remember that Dave Venlet was Hank Kleemann's RIO when they and another F-14 crew from VF-41 shot down the SU-22 Fitters in the Gulf of Sidra in '81.

Airplanes that try to do everything don't usually end up doing anything all that well. The F111 was going to be a jack of all trades, but it really found a home doing one thing. While all the stuff that they want the F35 to do is fine, it is going to take a lot of money and time to try to get one airplane to do it all.

As the job shoppers used to say: Rome wasn't built in a day..... and it cost a lot of money too!!!!

It's no surprise that the program has spent a bundle, and the way the A/F is running the program it is going to cost a lot more. I was involved with the alternate engine effort and they were throwing buckets of money at whatever they ran up against and the A/F paid it.

Gates is an absolute idiot for cutting the F-22 on the premise that this program would go exactly as he imagined it in his tiny little brain. In the mean time, the PAK-FA is expected to go IOC around the same time as the F-35 and will likely be far more dominant in A2A, making us REALLY wish we had bought more F-22s. This is going to be a historic blunder that the USAF will be hurting from for decades.

I can assure you that while the F-35 program is going through the usual "bumps in the road" typical of all new defense programs, it is NOT in "serious trouble".

As far as the alternate engine program is concerned, I think that it is a good idea in the long term, but I also think that the British should be paying the majority of the development costs, since Rolls-Royce is involved and I believe that they were the main instigators of this engine program.

I just read today, that the Pentagon claims a F-22 replacement will be needed by 2025.

Who are these people kidding ?

The 2018 bomber, is not going to be on the ramp by 2018 !

Gates had choked off that program and then reinstated it.

Is anything on-time, aside from a few drones ?
