Disassembled and inspected all the componets. found only the 2nd gear set and the drop gear set damaged. believe it or not, no damage to any of the other gears.

The synchros were worn as we expected. so we ordered all replacement parts, new Carobu drop gear set, new aluminum case for the dropgears that was damaged, and replacement of all bearings, synchros, synchro collars, and seals. changed the t/o bearing and seals as a precaution.

Wow, bad problem, great pictures. Was the gearbox original (never opened)? e.g., did it have aftermarket drop gears or other? I assume the "4 days" were of hard track time. - Tim

Gearbox was never opened, in the cars earlier days I believe the drop gear set was installed but it appears nothing was done to the gearbox.

About 3 weeks ago we took the car out to the FCA event at the new Montecello track.

Car ran Flawless and we were very happy with the results as was the client.

What did the D&I reveal to you as the root cause?
Based on the impact damage to teeth, I am guessing something "let go?"
I have seen gear stack spacers "go away" and cause gear teeth to hit what they aren't suppossed to... with similalr looking(I stress LOOKING) results...

On the post for the NOS box, I have a friend in Italy with a NOS: DOG RING F-40/288 box...for the "trackers" out there...Not cheap-but not crazy $ either...

Were the wheels designed with that offset? Or is the wheel mounted with a spacer? Lots of great pictures of the 'nitty gritty' bits! Thanks

All spacers were in place. we determined that the second gear broke a tooth and that tooth destroyed the gearset completly. the dropgear set we felt was broken due to a broken part from the second gear set getting between the gears.

We were amazed that none of the other gears were damaged aside of a little normal wear.

As for the wheels, they were made with the offset, no spacers.

    Regards, Jim

Manufactured with that offset; the wheels seem to fit perfectly using tho.se tires. The design of the wheel appears cleaner than the stock F40 wheel to. I am curious if the taller wheel tire combination has much effect on the overall gearing compared to the factory stock combination? Drop gears offset some of the loss, correct? Thanks
