What's the situation with that stripe? Is it Vinyl? If it is and you take it off, will there be a paint difference from different degrees of fade? That's the first year also. Assuming everything is ok, 75k would indeed be pretty good.

Not sure the stripe is a bonus but I would say if you can get for $75-80K that would be a great price. You may have to pay in the low $80's as wholesale looks to be $75-78K.

Thanks for info. Were there any improvements from 1997 to 2001 in the 550. Just do not want to end up with a first production model that will require extra work. Do you think it will be a major headache with repairs considering the car is now 10 years old? Thanks for the help.

For one, the '97's Magnesium wheels were recalled I believe due to deterioration. Also, I believe the notorious valve guide problem was more present in the earlier cars. I'm sure there were a few other little things that I can't thing of right now (I'm writing an english response :)).

One small update was the radio interface. Our 2001 550 has this:

the one you're looking at will have the archaic (and ugly) radio of the older models-- but I'm sure you can replace that easily.

You'll want to check out the dashboard area where it meets the windshield as the leather tends to pull away. Also look for bubbling around the AC controls, and loose leather over the passenger's airbag cover. Sticky buttons are also common on these cars. If you have a PPI, also have them check the ebrake as they are VERY finicky, as well as the suspension actuators.

Hope that helped and good luck!

If you remove they vinyl stripe, you will be albe to see a line in the paint if it has been on for a couple years. PB
