    I have a 2002 F1 360 spider with 85%-90% clutch life. 36,000 miles. I’ve owned it 1 year and put on 1500 miles.

Sporadically when shifting, I hear something like what you would hear when shifting an manual transmission from 1st to 2nd…similar to a bad syncro. But it’s happening in all gears, and it is random, and it occurs at all RPM’s. It seems less prevalent under hard acceleration, but maybe it’s just because I can’t hear the grind over the sound of the roaring engine.

Replaced the battery. No change. Whole car serviced 1500 miles ago when purchased used.

I don’t see any fluid leaks. Everything else appears and drives normal.

Any ideas? I hope nobody thinks im going to need a new tranny.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Check the fluid and make sure it does not have antifreeze in it. If your transaxle cooler goes, the two fluids mix to the detriment of the transaxle.

Also check the trans fluid to see if it is s contaminated and the level.. maybe they didn't fill it properly

After that ..does it happen more when hot vs cold ..cold vs hot ?

Transmission oil mixed with coolant. Don't drive the car and repair it asap. Engine, gearbox and differential are at risk. Oil transmission cooler 100% failed. Check for oil contamination in coolant reservoir

Yeah plus one on checking the fluid and replacing if you don’t find a heat exchanger failure.

When I got my car a few years ago it would periodically grind in various gears at all different random times. Turns out the transmission hadn’t been flushed in at least 10 years. Two flushes later and the grinding was totally gone, never had it happen since.

It happens randomly when hot and cold. All fluids were replaced about 1500 miles ago. I will check the level myself and inspect/replace if Insee anything unusual. Let me know if that triggers any other questions. Thank you!

After checking that we çan doing a little diag /checking the F1 system as well

Do you have any diagnostic tools ..if not we can do some timings to see if things are working properly

After that ..I would consider a F1 flush and a relearn ..that being said hear grinding is not usually a symptom of a poorly operating F1 system

Are you sure the gearbox fluid was changed and the filter screen was checked?
When I got my 430 three years ago I double checked all the fluids and filters. The gearbox filter screen had a lot of white silicone on it, indicating that it had never been removed and cleaned.

Definitely verify that there is no coolant mixed in the gearbox. I had a similar problem. The challenge stradale tcu seemed to make it worse. I tried multiple fluids, multiple relearns, a new clutch solenoid after determining it was leaking and even tracked down an SDX to work on it with. I wish I could say I figured it out, but it still has me puzzled. I ended up getting fed up, did a manual swap, and 4,000 not so gentle miles later I still have no transmission noises.
