This is just a thought I had...

I think it would be fantastic if Ferrari built a car styled after their modern F1 cars, but incorporate either their current V8 or V12 engine. The car would of course be a full carbon monocoque chassis, and would be designed exclusively for track use (i.e. not street legal). But the selling point would be F1 style and speed (well, near F1 speed), but with the reliability and ease of use of their current street cars. This would be a car that would not require a team of engineers/technicians to start, operate and maintain like their F1 cars do. It would be simple enough that one individual could trailer it to a track, spend all day on the track, and trailer it home that evening.

The FXX and 599XX sort of fall into this category, but I'm envisioning something even more simple than those cars to operate. Perhaps take the drivetrain from the 458 and repackage it in an F1 style body?

    Thoughts?

Lotus just sort of did this. Check ut the Exos they just unveiled. Neat car. Making 25 at a cool million a pop.

Fascinating idea, BUT: (i) it's very tough to drive even a recent Challenge car without track support, so the notion of trailering your near-F1 single-seater back and forth and running it yourself is probably unrealistic; and (ii) you're probably underestimating how tough it is to competently drive a fast single-seater. I'm certainly not a great racecar driver, but I've driven a couple of F1 cars very briefly and found them pretty intimidating- believe me, it's not like jumping into a FF or F2000 car.

There are at least 3 of those 3 seater F1 cars.

I think it's a very good idea, probably F3000 style. You could also hillclimb it. Edit: and make it big enough so that the average wealthy owner can fit. ;)

I think what you want is an A1GP car. Before it went under, the cars (at least the second generation of them) were designed and powered by Ferrari but not by exotic F1 engines. I believe the cars were based on the F2004.

Lol I was writing almost exactly this as well :D.

Wealthy clients who want an F1 car, buy one. The FXX and 599XX are both well over a million Euro to buy, so running costs isn't much of an issue with these guys. Lets say Ferrari WOULD do something like this, don't expect the cars to cost any less than a million either. And for that money, you can have any pre 2000 F1 cars. A 643 was for sale not too long ago for around 500K euro. Turn the revs down by 1000-1500 of maximum revs and you extend engine life by a lot, so running costs wouldn't be as high.

If you want a 2 seater F1 car for track days, get a caparo F1. They run for around 350K euro new. They don't really sell.
