Nah! - My own personal autoclave - Now *that* would be cool!......

BTW, my reading suggested the catalog will be ready tomorrow (July10th), not that the auction is tomorrow. But I could be wrong.

I wonder if their wind tunnel is also on the block?

    Cheers,
    Ian

Wow for someone that wasn't the most recent version of an F1 car now is their chance. I'd like that Faro arm.

Not sure they're going to get much $ for the wind tunnel: They are a technology of the past. The future is computer generated fluid dynamics.

so a used Ferrari goes for $2M, a Super (apparently not so 'super') Aguri should go for 10c on the $ or $200,000

You can reduce the need for wind tunnel time with simulations, but you can't replace it. You always need to validate model assumptions and verify solutions. There are just way too many variables to deal with to be able to get the model right and often a very small error in your assumptions leads to useless outputs.

CFD (computational fluid dynamics) is an off shoot of FEA (finite element analysis) and in both cases the standard line is that they make a good engineer fast and everyone else dangerous because it’s just plain hard to get the right answer.

Not to make this in anyway a P&R discussion, but look at the global warming models out there….which are a pet peeve or mine. These guys write modeling software, run simulations, and publish results with all kinds of predictions, but if you try to validate the model by inputting 50 or 10 or 1 year old data they don’t come close to predicting what we actually see today. The models are completely useless.

People who need the answers to be correct need to validate and confirm results. My guess is they CFD 100 ideas, wind tunnel 10 of them, then track test 2-3 of those.

    +1

I was going to say pretty much the same thing - CFD is a good aid (hence BMW Saubers purchase of a super computer recently) but my understanding is that they're all running at least one, and for the top teams, two tunnels pretty much 24/7. They wouldn't do that if it wasn't necessary.....

Unless of course you happen to be Honda and discover that your tunnel is "mis-calibrated".

The same old rules apply to both technologies - "garbage-in, garbage-out"

    Cheers,
    Ian
