Parts are rare and expensive and with 12 cylinders, there are LOTS of them. Rebuild cost on my Fathers 275 GTB/4 was circa $45k way back in the mid 1990's.
Why couldnt you just have pistons/cams/valves made instead of paying top dollar for the Ferrari stuff? Im sure someone makes pistons/cams etc..etc.. just as good if not better than the Ferrari engine parts? I know if my 348 engine packed it in I wouldnt be sourcing genuine Ferrari parts to rebuild it.
so what bearings, crankshaft, timing chain, gaskets. Would imagine, crankshaft, cams, pistons and valves would be easy ie crankshaft rebuilders, pistons from blanks and valves made local.
They would be rare and expensive now alright! So have them made for 10 times less the cost per part! $45K in the mid 90's for an engine rebuild is heart attack stuff for bum's like me.
Bearings are the same ones used in a VW Beetle. Timing chain is the same as a 351 Cleveland. Pistons the same as a Honda Civic. Valves shared from a Nissan Skyline RB26. Cams borrowed from a V12 Jag. Gaskets and the crank are the only genuine Ferrari part in there.
just did full rebuild for 365 C4, from rocker covers to sump, crank was poilshed, new pistons, rings bearings, VRS set, water pump o/haul, new clutch, pressure plate thrust bearing ect........just snuck in under 25k
yes they did, got them to read the brochure just before we started engine and clutch turned out really well, the man is happy, even made our own room to do it in, ex spray booth, all white with painted floors, got the oompalahs to wear over booties and white overalls to make sure we had a surgical look (not that it matters) plus had the booth on low fan to suck out as much dust as possible next project........lambo resto
the reason I will never own another Ferrari. I can't think of one in Melbourne I could be bothered dealing with.
