Hi all. I'm doing some work under my car and I would like to visually inspect for clutch wear while I am down there. I've heard Taz (and possibly others) mention on several occasions that the F1 clutch wear can be accurately checked by visually inspecting the throw-out bearing "guide pin". I have the full workshop manual and access to all of the parts diagrams, but I cannot find any reference to the "guide pin" in question. Can anybody here provide a good description, pictures, or maybe a drawing? I have access to a boroscope camera to facilitate this inspection. My car is a 2006 612 (F1). Thanks in advance!

Here is what Brian Crall had to say:

Ferrari Clutch Wear Measurement 456-Early 612

    Brian Crall:

    There are several ventilation holes.

On either version what limits clutch life is how far back the TO bearing sleeve or slave cylinder housing can travel rearward before coming to rest on the seal housing flange. Once it gets to the end of its travel the spring pressure starts going down and the clutch's days are numbered.

On a stick shift car there is an anti-rotation device with a pin riding in a slotted steel bracket which is easily seen through the bottom vent hole. The location of the pin in that slot gives you a very effective and accurate guide to remaining clutch life. It should be in the middle of the slot when new and will move to the rear as the clutch wears.

The F1 is a little more difficult. The guide pins for the TO bearing give you the same visual cue. But to really know remaining life looking at the distance between the rear of the sleeve and its distance to the flange of the seal hosing will tell you. It is a little harder. With a bore scope you can get a really good look.

See if this helps visualize it.

Thank you, Taz. Could you help me identify the parts in question? When Brian says "guide pins", is he referring to item #25 that Ferrari refers to as "stud"? When he refers to "seal housing", is he referring to item #21 "flange for servomechanism"? And the "sleeve"? I cannot clearly identify any "sleeve" in this drawing. I'm sorry for the many questions, but I'd like to be absolutely sure I am looking at the right components. The nomenclature that Brian uses has got me a little confused. Thanks again.

The sleeve is part 28 and the flange is part 21. The image I posted above is actually for 3 pedal V12s, not F1. On F1 there is no separate pin guide like Brian said and you need to look at the distance from the T/O bearing sleeve to the flange of the seal housing. The flexible pin is part 35, but there is no guide like on the 3 pedal. Look at the not for F1 clutch to see what Brian meant. On the 3 pedals, the guide bolts directly to the flange.

Ok, I understand it now. Thanks, Taz!
