On a 430, does the F1 system double clutch when downshift? I know that it matches the revs but does the F1 let out the clutch after it has moved the gearbox to neutral and then disengage the clutch before shifting it to the next lower gear?

    Thanks,

    Enzo

Not needed on any car with a Synchro gear box...some do it anyway, but unless the materials inside the box are SUPER SOFT (highly unlikely) or the driver is completely incompetent, then it is not needed on modern street cars.

I know Ron Zitza wont let you drive any of his Porsche race cars unless you can double clutch. I do wonder why so I'll ask him next time I see him.

Orlando- Double clutch or heel and toe? A lot of difference.

    Testa,

He may have straight cut racing gear boxes that are FAR LESS forgiving. Does he (and you) mean heel and toe as noted by Taz or TRUE double clutching? Double clutching is push in the pedal take the car out of gear let out on the pedal, push the pedal in again and put the gear box in the next year (up or down...does not matter) then let out on the clutch pedal... Rev matching is ALWAYS a good thing (and is heel and toeing...though that phrase is totally wrong as it is the ball of your right foot on the brake and the side of that same foot (or maybe the heel if you have a special pedal set up) pushing on the gas to get the revs up) and the F1 tranny's do it PERFECTLY!

    Best,
    James

apparently the phrase comes from the days when pedals were far apart and you literally used your heel and toe. i wouldn't know myself.

I do "heel and toe", but I use the inner upper part of my right foot and with almost the upper inferior part I push on the gas pedal, so like you said the it's not literally heel and toe. But I have tried what he does which is the double clutch as you stated and also heel and toe on the last transition and to do it quickly while racing takes some serious practice.
