Looked around the forum for this issue, if it is one...

Goes into reverse fine, start backing up, lift foot off the throttle, and the gearbox goes to N. Have to re-select R again and it's fine. The car recently had a full major and F1 service(for another issue). Otherwise, shifting seems fine.

    Issue, glitch, fun/games, normal?

So when they fixed the F1 they recalibrated it?

Kicks out maybe less than 30 seconds after selecting reverse - it's done it twice in the last few weeks. The drop to N from 1st has caught me off-guard already at a light - but it was about 5 minutes, not 10 minutes. Clutch was also replaced at the F1 service, but I have to look back through the receipt to see about a specific calibration. It was a dealer service.

I guess my first advice is allway kick in in neutral when stopped always. When using reverse stab at the throttle release, stab again, release and do this for backing up and see if it drops out then. This is the way most of us drive them. The clutch seems to allways slip in reverse it never fully ingauges even at 3500 rpm. Drive it eactly like a manual.

It will automatically go to N if you have your foot off all of the pedals for any more than about 5 seconds, so you need to either be on the throttle or the brake most of the time. It is meant to do this, so if it wasn't before it wasn't set up properly.

There is no advantage (in terms of clutch wear) in selecting N at the lights. It is fine to do this if that's your habit, but you're not achieving anything in the sense of looking after the system components.

You should always park the car in 1st.

Have seen the same issue with my 355 F1. I had the F1 rebuilt and upgraded to the 360 pump.

Work was done by dealer (great job) - including new hoses and clutch. F1 system was re-calibrated.

What you are seeing is completely normal... its an F1 safety\behavior issue. Same issue if you are trying to reverse into a tight spot an try and open the door... it goes N immediately.

I recommend always parking in Neutral (unless on a steep hill). If the battery is dead when you try to start it next time, you won't be able to move the car if it's in gear.

I'm sure I read somewhere on this website a very knowledgeable Ferarri person explaining why there is no mechanical advantage to selecting N every time you stop at the lights in an F1 car.
If I can find it I'll post the link.
FWIW if I'm stopped for more than a couple of minutes I do select N, but only because it makes me feel better. Not because I believe it's helping the car.

Fair enough. Presumably though there's a reason why Ferrari set the warning buzzer to come on if you park in N, and a reason why they recommend never leaving the car parked in Neutral. I'll follow their advice and if I'm that unlucky that the battery has gone flat the next time I get in, I'll just have to deal with it.

Great! Thanks for the notes about the R/N operation.
I have a usual habit of using N at any stop lasting more than about 15 seconds. Comes from driving various old cars that have strange clutches or non-synchro boxes.
Normally I park the car in 1st, but as I've been doing the parking brake work I've been leaving in neutral. But basically as others have said, it's a manual gearbox - it's just that it has slightly different controls than tradition. I really like the F1!

All liability. If they don't tell you to leave it in 1st gear and you park it in neutral Ferrari might be on the hook for your mistake. Imagine leaving the car in neutral and forget the handbrake. You walkaway as your car rolls down a hill and runs over your neighbors puppy (or worse)

All that stuff in the owners manual and the beeping when you shut the car off is becuase of lawyers and nothing more.

Some advantages to parking in Neutral for sure... however the 355 handbrake is NOT the most reliable ! Mine needs adjusting regularly (despite new pad). If I have to park on an incline I park in 1st as I cannot trust the handbrake.

    Fair enough.
By the same token, if I park my car in neutral and it ends up rolling away and crashing (or, ANYTHING else happens to it), I'm sure my insurance company will want an explanation as to why I ignored the owner's manual...

And they will be very reluctant to "pay out" as a result.

Given the choice, I'll take the chance of a flat battery giving me a PITA, thanks.

Oh, and just to add, if it's all about "driving it like a manual", I'd never leave a manual car parked in neutral.

I'll take my chances with the battery dying that's only inconvenient.

car rolling or moving because the parking brake sucks is not inconvenient if it hits something.

If its in the garage chocks would eliminate that, but out in the world parking it I put it in gear.

As steve stated it should be in gear when shut off, didnt mean to come accross like a smart ass steve. To the ORiginal poster pick up a wsm and read about the f1. It will tell you all sorts of stuff thats good. Steve obviously leaves his in gear at lights or reasonably short stops, i dont. I do not recall seeing anything supporting either way but there is certain conditions when it will beep at you. I have tested reverse and mine does seem to slip the clutch right up to 4000 rpm( thats as fast as i dared go in reverse) so most of us agree short bursts of throttle in reverse is best for clutch wear.
