F1 engine longevity

    I don't think this has been discussed this season. I've seen pretty much every practice, and all of the qualification and races. I have seen very few engine failures as compared to previous years. If I were to guess, engine failures have been a third of previous years, especially 2 years and more ago. If I recall correctly, there were none in the last race in Germany. Is the lack of traction control a factor in this or is it higher tolerances in the engines?

    I don't know if traction control has an effect on engine longevity, but I'm sure there have been less engine failures since the 19,000 RPM limiter was introduced.

    eversince the 19k rev limit, the 10 grid penalty, engineers and designers were all working over time trying to make engines reliable, really reliable. in fact, i can't recall when was the last engne failure we've seen. MS's in Suzuka 2006?

    btws, i missed those days when the teams had qualifying engines, and race engines .

    back in the day, we put a fresh engine in after Friday qualifying. then that ran sat practice and qual then the warm-up and race, then the following race Friday and so on. Generally logged about 400-425 miles between rebuilds on those DFVs but could go 500+ at a push. Gearbox was similar, new CWP Friday night, new gears for the warm-up and race. generally took about 1.5 hours for motor change, about 3 for the diff and 20mins for the gears. pre race sat night was about 10-12 man hours with no problems.

    There have been quite a few blown engines since the MS disaster in 06'. Red Bull and STR have blown a few during races if I'm not mistaken, and my favorite was when one of the Honda's blew an engine in 07' with the flames shooting out the back having the caption "brings new meaning to global warming".

    They've certainly spent a lot more resources in order to make them much more reliable which I think is mainly attributed to the 19k rev limit as well as the engine freeze. If they're not allowed to develop the engine anymore I'd figure the only thing left to do on them would be to make them last longer.
