I was just browsing through www.formula1.com results' list for the fifties and found a few odd things:

    1) The 1950 Ferrari is listed as a Ferrari-Jaguar
I thought it was a Ferrari chassis with a Ferrari engine, so what gives?

    2) There are standing armies of Ferrari drivers.
For instance 1952 lists a total of 16 (!) Ferrari drivers.
I assume there were a few factory drivers and the rest were "gentlemen" drivers who bought a F1 Ferrari (???) to participate in some of the races?

Ha, I just found the answer to this one:

In 1950 Ferrari used 4 different F1 cars (imagine that today!). One of them, the 166S was actually equipped with a Jaguar XK 120 engine. This car was only used by a "gentleman" driver, it wasn't a factory entry. So it is kinda odd that www.formula1.com lists the Scuderia car as Ferrari-Jaguar.

Now there is a trivia bit for you!

    According to here: http://www.f1rejects.com/drivers/biondetti/text.html

The Ferrari/Jaguar 166s was a private entry by Clemente Biondetti and not Ferrari (which I've just noticed that you did point out!):

    Formula One

"The 1950 racing year, though, is perhaps the most important ever, for it saw the birth of the World Championship, to consist of several of the more important races in the European season.

For most of that year, Biondetti had been driving for the works Jaguar team, coming 8th in the Mille Miglia in an XK120 with co-driver Bronzoni. He then drove a new C-type at Le Mans with Leslie Johnson.

Biondetti was so impressed with the car that he tried to get one to enter for the Italian races or the European season, including the World Championship Italian GP at Monza.

Unable to do that, instead he went for something a little different, building his own hybrid car, sticking the 3.4 litre Jaguar 6 sports engine in his Ferrari 166S! But this car would not prove overly successful. "

Can you show a link that claims it to be a Scuderia car? - I can only find the 1950 Italian GP where it titles it as a Ferrari - Jaguar (which is merely describing what it was)

    Just to add (From: http://www.formula1.com/results/season/1950/385/)

    1950 Italian Grand Prix

    Ret 22 Clemente Biondetti Ferrari-Jaguar (laps)17 Engine (grid)25

Looks like he might have been better off leaving the Ferrari engine in it!

I didn't say it was a Scuderia car. In fact the one source I found clearly points out that it was a private entry.

However what is totally odd, is that www.formula1.com shows ALL 1950 Ferrari's as Ferrari-Jaguar, when in reality all drivers with the exception of Biondetti drove Ferrari-Ferrari:

Ah! - I'm with you now! - I was looking at the individual races where they're all listed correctly - not the drivers page!

Perhaps the FIA might like to hear about your findings - You should e-mail them.
(And I totally agree - it's a bloody poor show for the sports official body to get that wrong!)

That's what I thought too. I don't care about some website somewhere but this is the sports official hall of fame. They should get their own history right.

BTW: I don't think this is the only mistake. They are also missing drivers in individual years. Hard to understand.
