Ok....I am new to the F world! Just bought a 1999 F355 F1 spider, it has 18K miles which I drove it yesterday for a couple of hours, parked it in the garage, just went to start it and this light stays on after the 30 sec. system check. I can engage 1st gear but it will not move and this light is not flashing but constantly on. I have checked the hood, trunk, etc....now I have a great yellow paperweight in my garage. Just thinking about calling for a flatbed to take it to the dealer for service. Any last minute advice?

No, I bought it from Marshal Goldman Motors in Ohio a couple of weeks ago.

Let me be the first to say that I am truly sorry this happened so soon after you bought your baby. Did you get a PPI done prior to purchasing it?

I cannot offer you an assistance but I can tell you that that light scared me a few weeks ago--30 miles after a full engine-out service it came on (I can't remember if it was flashing or constant) WHILE I was driving down the road!!! Luckily it went away after about a mile.

I'm not sure if an OBDII reader can check a code since I don't think it's related to the CEL. The dealer is generally required for F1 tranny and convertible top problems--unless you are lucky enough to live near an indepedent that has an SD computer... :(

Call Marshall, see if they'll help you out on this.

You have many more service options in Chicago than in Cleveland.

    Who did the PPI?

Usually good to have the PPI done by someone other than the seller, but OTOH if they inspected it and found no problems then maybe that could help you now.

    Good luck with it.

The PPI was done by the same wholesaler you bought the car from?

Life is all about making mistakes and learning from them. That is what makes us who we are today. However, making mistakes with Ferraris can be financially devestating. I honestly hope that Marshall will help you out in some way. Please keep us updated on what they do or don't do for you.

How many miles did you put on the car before the light came on?

This forum has saved me thousands of dollars over the past year. Make sure you put FChat on your favorites. Check it at least once a day and you will slowly glean invaluable knowledge about your car so if something comes up sometime you might be able to save yourself money. For example, a dealer will charge you over $100 to tell you that you have a blown fuse and replace it. You can diagnose a blown fuse and replace it in less than 20 minutes for less than a dollar.

I would definitely call Marshal Goldman Motors before you send it anywhere.

Not a good move, but Goldman has a good reputation as high-end exotic dealer in the midwest.

Hopefully they'll step up and help get this sorted.

I'm sorry to read this... I'm thinking of buying a 355 F1 and the tranny is one of the things that I'm worried about. I wish it's only an electronics thing, which would be fixed quickly (and cheaply !).

    Good luck...

Where did you get the idea that an electronics problem on a Ferrari would be cheap to fix? :D

Well, after all is said and done...the issue was the clutch seals were leaking...they have been replaced, bearing plate was ok...and now I just invested $2k into my yellow Ferrari toy! Welcome to ownership! I still love the car.

Well, $2K is $2K, but glad it's resolved.

Not sure a PPI would have caught that prior to the failure light going on.

    Enjoy.

2k for clutch seals...Guys, is that right? Seems real high to me. Is it an F1 issue?

Thanks for posting details to help others who might have the same problem; I'm bit confused though, did the leaking seals soak the clutch causing it to slip? You could engage 1st, but then when you stepped on the gas it would just rev and not move?

When I purchased my car I had a similar issue, leaking triple seals soaked the disc. My clutch was slipping and I did get an occasional F1 light warning, but it was driveable.

$2k could be about right for a clutch job with parts + labor.

Enjoy the F1, mine is a BLAST!

Another tip - replace the F1 pump relay. It's like $30 from Ricambi, and if it fails the pump can run continuously leading to failure ($2-3k for a rebuild or 360 pump retrofit).

    +1 on the relay replacement

FYI. My clutch out the door with new Hill TO bearing and all seals was just a smidge over $4K. I'll check my receipt to see just the labor component was since that should give you a good idea if you were overcharged for the seals only.
