True and excellent points. First year is enormous investment to make the event a success and even possible!

Maybe the organisers expect people who attend the Grand Prix to patronise the casinos between races ?

A world racing event in the heart of the gambling mecca would make it a true Las Vegas experience, no ?

At $2500 for a typical seat, that's quite a bit to ask just for one race.

I drove on the repaved section of the Strip this morning. They are about 40% finished with the Strip part, which is the most difficult part to redo.

I could drive over the old and new surfaces for a comparison. The new surface is 1000 times better. The old one has been chopped up for years for repairs and whatever and has cracks here and there. You can feel the difference immediately when going from the new to the old.

Today's "boots on the ground" F1 report from the Sports and Entertainment Capital of the World ---

The old Frontier hotel that was torn down 20 years ago has been a vacant lot and owned by Wynn for at least 10 years. Its directly across the street from the Wynn.

This week they started some kind of construction that will be for the F1 race. Not sure what yet. Maybe a staging area. Maybe a media area. Maybe some kind of venue to support the F1 race. Whatever it is they are raising up the surface a good 10-12 feet.

Formula One is seeing brisk sales for the approximately 105,000 tickets it controls for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

After the first two of three planned tickets deployments, the inaugural race weekend is nearly sold out, according to Las Vegas Grand Prix CEO Renee Wilm.

“We are experiencing incredible demand,” Wilm said. “We are so thankful to our fans for being so excited and waiting online for us to hit the button to put it all on sale.”

Although a large portion of the tickers are grandstand seats, the VIP experience is also big with up to 40,000 hospitality seats available for the race, according to Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

In fact, Greg Maffei, CEO of F1 parent company Liberty Media, said the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be the biggest race in terms of VIP offerings.

“This will be by far the biggest race in terms of revenue, VIP experiences, everything about this will be at the top,” Maffei said. “It will be the paragon for Formula One.”

Among those set to fill the luxury spaces offered during the race are an expected who’s who list of celebrities, according to Formula One CEO Stefano Domencali.

“It’s going to be big, that’s no doubt,” Domencali said. “I’ve already seen the list of people who want to come and that will be just impressive.”

The paddock suites and club spaces that will be located on the top two floors of the 300,000-square-foot-facility will host between 7,500-8,000 ticket holders, according to Hill. The grandstand being built across from the paddock will hold 27,000 total fans, with a skybox slated to be located at the top of the grandstand that will house between 5,000-10,000 fans, Hill noted.

On Koval Lane high-end hospitality areas will line the street, one geared toward those looking for a Las Vegas club experience and those geared toward the hardcore racing fan.

Aside from those spaces, other resorts such as the Bellagio and Mirage will offer their own experiences. Grandstands built in front of other resorts will account for an additional 10,000-15,000 tickets.

“We just had people in Europe and they reported back that everybody that came up to our booth in Berlin wanted to talk about Formula One being in Las Vegas,” Hill said. “The excitement is great. It’s going to be a sold-out crowd, we know that. It’s going to be a fantastic event.”

The excitement is shared among current F1 and former drivers, Maffei added.

“The buzz is huge,” Maffei said. “We’ve had video of them (current drivers) talking about their excitement for Las Vegas. We had one driver who retired say, ‘If I’d known Vegas was coming I would have stayed another year.’ There’s a lot of excitement among the drivers as well as the whole racing community.”

Still a chance to get tickets

Those who have yet to secure tickets will have one last opportunity to do so later this year.

“We did hold back some inventory because we wanted to package it and market it in a very specific way,” Wilm said. “That will be coming out very soon.”

This reads like a Report to Shareholders. The race may/may not suck, but vulgarity is assured.

I know sales have been good but I don't know if this article isn't a bit overly optimistic. The first year I think there's a lot of excitement and anticipation. They have to deliver. If they don't I think the next year won't have prices as high or even as many seats. But I'm sure its going to sell out the first year.

I drove past the building yesterday and its enormous. Its hard to see how big it is in photos and movies. Its going to be a fantastic place for F1 fans to visit year round. There's more going on here than just "a paddock".

I asked a relative to bring back a cheap small something, or even just a picture of something, touting the F1 race. He found nothing. I don't know how Vegas works, but isn't that a little odd?

My god the entire city seems torn up. Everywhere you go are orange cones. Not sure if it was the "infrastructure bill" or getting ready for the F1 race and Super bowl but it seems like every street in the city is being torn up for one reason or another.

I had my hotel concierge contact me and refund my hotel room at Resorts World, they said they were double booked. They did give me $800 as compensation, so I can't complain too much. For what it's worth, I know somebody on the board of Mclaren F1 that had the same exact thing happen, which really surprised me. I'm a nobody, so that was to be expected, but him? That surprised me.
