2013 Ferrari F138 (F2013) The last car before the V6 Hybrid era. The F138 was the 59th ninth F1 car built by Ferrari. The name comes from a combination of the current year and the number of cylinders, to mark the fact that this is the eighth and final year of competition for the V8 engine configuration. The project, which goes by the internal code name 664, was the first design to come from the reorganisation concerning working methods which had been in operation for several months, with the creation of two distinct groups of designers: one working on this car and the other on the completely different car, which raced in 2014. This is my favorite thread, great pictures and memories- can't wait for Tuesdays and Thursdays! Thanks!
A forgotten sacrifice by Mika Salo, he fell on his sword for SF and by rights won this race. His record should show one GP win with an asterisk.
I believe that Patrick carried a pack of smokes in his driving suit. He would light one up as soon as he removed his helmet. Gauloises I think.
I believe Ickx had climbed to 4th place, ahead of most of the F1 field, when his suspension broke. But this performance made him a wanted man for 1968. Most thought he would stay with Tyrrell (who was running Matra's F2 program) but Ferrari managed to land him. (Perhaps he didn't want to play second fiddle to Jackie Stewart?)
Was browsing books at the Auto Aero Bookstore in Burbank...it was Tatra Day...and a new book out is titled "When Sex was Safe...and auto racing was bloody dangerous." Seems appropriate to so much of the conversation here when we complain about the present and look back at the past. And I think the past was better than the present...in terms of sex and racing.
Here are some shots from the Dallas Grand Prix 1984. 100 degrees that day, and Nigel Mansell's car broke down on the last straight, and he pushed the car across the line. It would have been interesting to see them competing in their prime together. Arguably the only year they were both in competitive machinery was 1965, and Jackie was a rookie and still learning the ropes. 1968 would have been more indicative if Clark had survived.
Okay, I'll take a stab at it. Back row left to right: Tony Maggs, a young looking Jack Brabham, Innes Ireland, Jo Bonnier, Dan Gurney Front row left to right: Trevor Taylor, ?????, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Lorenzo Bandini, Ritchie Ginther, Phill Hill
I think it's John Surtees that's in the bottom row second from the left next to Jim Clark , so bottom row ?, John Surtees, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham,?, P Hill. Top row I only recognize Dan Gurney in the upper right hand corner.
