Formula 1 would not have survived without Ferrari... Ferrari would not have survived without Fiat... Fiat would not have survived without... Gianni Agnelli, the great, l'Avvocato, one of the most powerful man in Italy, who built an imperium with and around press (La Stampa), Football (President for decades of Juventus, Turin's top Club), and of course big Boss of Fiat. Admirer of Enzo Ferrari, fast cars, capital and women. Became a major sponsor and shareholder of Ferrari. Without the Fiat fortune, it is unlikely Ferrari would have survived. He loved Ferrari F1 drivers, and spend lots of time with them. A great man of a great era. Last picture shows 4 great man, back in the 70's, what a difference with today's Uncle sweater & C°.... Great shots and a fitting tribute to l'Avvocato. Are there any photos of Agnelli and Ferrari together?
The 1976 race was an incredible battle between James Hunt and Jody Schecter, I don't know how many times they swapped the lead. Saturday the weather was appalling--rain, cold and Finger Lakes mud everywhere. It actually snowed Saturday night before the race.
Not many... Apart from their friendship and respect, there was understandably also a lot rivalry between the two powerful man. This is the only picture I know. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I drove to the circuit and parked near the garage building. I spent the whole day making trips between the car and the garage, getting soaked each time. After watching the mechanics tinkering for awhile, I'd go back to my car and use the heater to try and dry off my feet and socks. I don't remember what I did about lunch. Only one car went out all day; like I said, Ronnie Peterson took his March out once after lunch, spun off and was towed back in. The day was an entire waste for both participants and spectators. Fortunately, Sunday dawned dry and the race went off without a hitch; the sun even showed itself at brief times. As stated, Hunt in the McLaren and Scheckter in the Tyrrell had a ding-dong battle for much of the race, with frequent lead changes. It appears that the 6-wheeler's tires began to go off late in the race (remember, no pit stops in those days) and Hunt gradually pulled away to win. A still-sore Lauda finished 3rd, nearly a minute back. (I learned my lesson from that rainy Saturday at the Glen: when the exact same thing happened in Austin in 2015, I stayed at my hotel and never went to the track!)
A few more photos from 1976 at the Glen: a pensive Roger Penske in the garage (whatever happened to him?) and a couple of muddy Ferraris parked outside. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Of course, the second photo is the original mid-engined prototype, which only raced at Monaco in that form in the hands of Richie Ginther. No one could have predicted the domination of its 1.5 litre version a year later.
It's still remarkable that, even in the bigger 3-litre cars, they managed to start 4-wide without calamities, and it's a wonder that Stewart managed to muscle the H-16 BRM onto the front row. And look how close behind the second row is!
1961 - 1962, perhaps. By 1963 the sharknose was gone and the cars looked substantially different. And Phil Hill was driving the lousy ATS!
