I had the pleasure to talk to him a few times at the Brooklands Reunions, not far from where his garage was. Tony Brooks was an intelligent but unassuming individual; the antithesis to most of drivers today, I would say.
This was at the Avus "circuit", a silly place to hold a GP, but one that suited Ferrari very well. Some people don't realize that in spite of the front-engined car's shortcomings, Brooks very nearly beat Jack Brabham for the '59 championship.

Not quite pole, and not quite DNS... he was third on the grid and disqualified on lap 4 for a push start. The car did form the basis for the successful VPJ6 Indy Car, which also introduced the Cosworth V8 to Indy competition.
