Bout time. They talked about the Kubica crash, but mainly focused on Hamilton. Said he was the first black driver to get pole position and win a race, etc. Maybe he's ESPN's next Tiger Woods. Hopefully F1 gets more notice on ESPN in the future.

The Dumb Arses on KABC local news in Los Angeles said Hamilton was the first African American to win an F1 race ..... I didn't know Hamiltom was American

    1) He's not from Africa
    2) He's not from America

So in other words, very politically correct, but FACTUALLY VERY wrong.
The British media just call him black. Why can't they do that in America? It's not as if people are sensitive about that sort of thing, are they?

Another question, why must I come off as such an ass? Man, this internet really empowers people to be jerks.

I don't think the word black is not preferred. That's what I use. I know I talked about this in another thread, but when someone is 1/2 black like Tiger or Lewis, they just call them black. lol

Non-hispanic white always confused me as well. I guess whites and hispanics overlap somewhere.

I consider myself a Black American. I'm sure there must have been someone on the tree from Africa, but, 3/4 of my ancestry is immediately traced to the Caribbean .. Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic and 1/4 Black/American Indian ... I'm a mutt .... a proud mutt.

I think Lewis was born in England, but I know his dad is from Grenada. Not sure about his mother as he doesn't really talk to her anymore (at least that's what I heard).

The last time I heard anything about F1 on ESPN was when JPM went to NASCAR. I hope it gets some more coverage in the states.

Before the JPM move, the last thing I heard about F1 was when Michael won the first six races of '04, but then lost in Monaco.

Think about the term "politically correct". Why does it need the adverb?

An internal combustion engine isn't "theoretically possible" -- it's "possible". A hyperdrive is "theoretically possible", because it would be incorrect to say it was "possible".

So if it's not correct to call something "correct", then it's "politically correct".

One of the speed tv commentators on Wind Tunnel caught himself just before calling Hamilton "african american", remembering that he's british.

As to what the media should call Hamilton -- how about "a rookie"? ;)

The press is treading a fine line. They don't want to be seen making a big deal out of ethnic issues, but at the same time, they're hoping Hamilton will draw a larger F1 viewer base in the US ... because of ethnic issues.

But this weekend, Hamilton's race was "Canadian GP". :p

(When people doing surveys ask me what my race is, I tell them "Indy 500". I'd say "1000 lakes" or "Spa", but few yanks have heard of those.)

    How about "race driver"?

I really hate this talk about his skin color, it doesn't make him any faster or slower. I wish they would focus on his on-track accomplishments and skip the damned social commentary.

I was surprised to see it on the local news last night as well. Highlighted both the crash and Lewis' win.

I agree but in the end, it is a social "barrier" being broken and becomes big news for awhile, just like Tiger and race was a big deal for a bit.
All I know is that it beats the hell out of anymore Paris Hilton BS!

This is what I don't understand.

Isn't it called the human race?

So people with different colored skin now are a different species? I've always found that phrase to be soo odd.

    That's just Nike marketing BS.

Tiger Woods isn't even black, he is 50% Thai and is only something like 1/8 black.

In Asia, Nike markets him as being Thai, in the US he is marketed as being black.

F'cking ridiculous, if you ask me.

Looks like the Kubica crash is going to be on the ESPN show Around the Horn coming up next. It's a shame that only a crash like that makes the news here in the US...

The Sopranos series finale also made it on SC, and got more airtime than the F1 race.
