Is it possible to watch current (upcoming obviously) or past F1 on HD format anywhere? Has F1 footage (season discs, etc) ever been shot as HD as a documentary or something similar - I understand current DVD technology is not HD (including claims of upscanning DVDs that are just untrue), but the upcoming Blu-Ray (due late spring) will be, so assume we may finally get to see F1 on Blu-Ray DVD sometime?

They only shot some promo shots back in Hockenheim 03. I think you should be able to find them somewhere on the net.
After Bernie canceled his digital TV project (7 different perspectives where you can choose what you want to watch) F1 got really bad broadcasting (for example Spain, I bet the local hosts use cameras from the 80s, can't wait for this years horror pics...)
So I think we will see F1 in HD at the earliest in 2008 or 09 when/if the FOM produces all races....

Thanks for the note. You would think with F1 supposedly representing the cutting edge of technology and the millions spent, that someone would have the brilliant idea of shooting it in a decent format!

True, but then again how would that help in the US where HDTV is still under developed (despite Clinton's efforts making it the official standard for 2003).

Well I wouldn't argue that F1 would help HD in the US (what will?), but maybe HD could help F1?

Is it just me or in the past three-four years. the Asia country races (Except Japan for some reason) always looked as if I SpeedTV got a copy of a copy of a VSH tape.

That's the irony of it all: They could easily design the ultimate in HDTV yet their government chose the world's poorest TV standard. For once Europe did something right. :)

Chicken and egg question: Yes it makes sense, but only if the broadcasting station has HD equipment and if the majority of the fans have HDTVs at home. They won't buy those unless there are HDTV programs to watch. TV stations won't buy expensive HDTV equipment unless the consumers have the TV sets to watch them.

That's why it is crucial that the govt dictates a change like that. That chance was missed in the US, whereas in Europe HDTV have become standard by now. Luckily the situation is changing here now as well. Soon enough there will be more than "just" Jay Lenno in HDTV. :)

I am not sure about Europe, we got maybe 3 HDTV prorgams here in germany and the best thing we weren't able to watch them because you're not able to buy the recievers (production problems or whatever...) The Fifa World Cup 06 will be shoot in HDTV (but only via pay-TV) so this might be a step forward...

Actually the Japan TV Coverage last year was quite ok, and they tested a new system for onboard footage (we got brilliant onboard footage during heavy rain, whihch was awesome ;-)) Hopefully will this be used the whole next season! There are far worse examples of really bad quality, for example Brazil or Spain... it looks like the local hosts are stuck in the 80s...

Interesting. Every time I fly to Europe I get green with envy seeing EVERYBODY with a HDTV ANYWHERE. Airports, hotels, bars, homes, shops. You'd be hardpressed to find a regular TV in Europe. Strange that you don't get the programming for it.

That's actually the worst: Watching an "inflated" regular picture on a superdooper HDTV.

Now if they could broadcast F1 in HD, then all we would need is it in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound....I would be in heaven.

That would be so cool...The only race I went to was in Spain, and sat on a hairpin as the cars come in downshifting and blowing off the excess fuel buildup, it was a deafening roar (especially the Hondas for some reason). To get a high quality audio (and video of course) of that would be impressive. Last night I watched a program on bugs in Alaska on HDTV, gee... if only F1 could match the technology that we give to watchin bugs.
