I thought I had seen it all on my car after owning it for several years but I had something new happen today. When driving the F1 gear selector light started to blink in 3rd gear and 4th gear but no other gears. This wasn't the F1 failure light but the actual gear selector light that tells you what gear you're in. It drove just fine although I wasn't pushing it very hard and the gear indicator light wouldn't flash in any other gear. No other warning lights, no issues with drivability. When I got home I checked the fluid levels and those seemed fine too. Had I not noticed the flashing I would have never known there was an issue because it drove and shifted just fine.

We've got a long drive tomorrow and I'm having second thoughts on driving it. Anyone else seen this before or have any suggestions?

I think that means the clutch is slipping (flashing number).

Flashing gearbox symbol means pump/hydraulic issue.

Strange...haven't heard of that one before. Normally if the clutch is going (like mine did 4+ yrs ago) you feel it really slips and is slower to engage at launch, and you'll get the F1 beep again at launch. In 3rd and 4th it's easy to shift, I wouldn't expect a warning then if the clutch was going.

For tomorrow, I would drive it with the cell phone fully charged just in case :D

    Got some good news.

I was able to confirm through Dave Helms that the only signal going to the gear selector light is a counter signal, nothing else. There is a long shot that it could be something new that Dave hasn't seen before but is likely just a bad connection to the counter.

If Dave says it I take it to the bank because he's forgotten more about the 355 than I'll ever know. I'm just very thankful that he's a part of our community and willing to listen and respond when he gets a call or email. Thanks Dave!

Agree 100% that what Dave says trumps anything we can contribute.

Good to know that piece of info.

Ran the car today on a long drive with the Santa Barbara Cars & Coffee group. Car ran flawlessly and not a single hiccup. Dave still wants to try and figure out what could have caused it in the first place but it appears to have been a phantom problem.

    Stay tuned!

    Monteman,

I have a similar problem on my car but, my gear indicator only flashes when in 4th or 6th gear. I was begining to think that perhaps the "Octopus" or the F1 gear acuator assembly was faulty. This gives me hope that perhaps I can fix the problem myself without a five figure repair bill attached for parts.

P.S. thanks to Uconn Husky for the manual F1 clutch reset procedure that definately made a huge change in the rpm's where my car actually engages reverse and first gear(previous owner installed new clutch but never updated computer with new wear values).

F430 2008 - I had the 4th gear flashing light indicator issue - then sometimes jumping into other gears - 5th, 6th, 3rd - or back to neutral - which is NOT safe !
took it to supercar clinic & like everyone else, they had a good look & confirmed that at 33K miles = the clutch.
So...... agreed the new clutch then they sent me video of the flywheel with blued spots - so agreed that as well.
Got the car back - all had been reported as AOK. It seemed OK - then a couple of days later I had more gear change issues - but now mainly first to second.
It went back - re-bled the F1 fluid & got it back - Still not exactly right - though they say that on the one-hour drive that I insisted they do - that it was faultless.
So - took it to a different local garage & asked him to go through the same routine =
bleed & tighten any F1 hydraulic fluid connections inc the actuator bleed screws - but - while he had the car, to put in a new battery, cos even though it seems OK, its not had a new one for 5+ yrs. Amazingly, driving home, the car seemed to be miraculously "just right". Its hard to put your finger on it, but now "all seemed well" with all gears working fine now. So I am not convinced that the problem all along was not just the battery - and not the clutch. Why ? - because I also had a Merc S550 recently and when I changed the battery, all sorts of seemingly unrelated gremlins inc gear change issues miraculously vanished ! Just a thought before you spend £7000 on a new clutch & flywheel - could just possibly be the battery. Its been going fine ever since (touch wood) - about 3 months now.

I had something like this and after checking
Found the engagement potentiometer was acting up even though I was shifting in and out of 3 gear every once an a while I would see 3 flashing then stop stay on with no slipping or jumping out of gear no other gear was doing it

Started with checking hydraulic pressure from pump system put a gauge in and compared it to the reading from TCU 53 bar during every shift —-good—- then check clutch reading and wear no problem there either ——- that lead me the TCU inputs —-engine speed - output speed - TPS - gear selection and gear engagement potentiometer

this is where we found that the potentiometer was not giving the right signal occasionally even thought the shift was good the TCU didn’t see 3 gear shift it —but because the TCU was seeing the right output speed to engine speed signal for that gear it only flashed the indicator and not make a shift to higher gear

Once I replace the part never happened again
I didn’t relearn my clutch or pressure setting
