Going to my first F1 Race in Austin this weekend. The race starts at 2 PM what time should I arrive to avoid all the traffic so I get there in plenty of time and not miss any of the activities.

I saw that the weather is not going to be good most of the week with thunder storms. I wanted to see all the F2 and other races and qualifying but with thunderstorms do they still run the races. I know they run in rain but Thunderstorms?

    Thanks

Arnie, I usually get to the track between 10 and 11. Some people come even earlier and there is always lots to do and see. I recommend making sure you get there by no later than noon.

Regarding the thunder storms. You're right, they don't typically run F1 in thunderstorms. Current weather forecasts look okay to me... Friday might be the worst day but there's a great chance Sunday will be totally dry. I'd prepare with some rain gear just to be sure.

When my wife and I went to Silverstone in 2014, we had Thursday-Sunday tickets. We turned up each day around 6-7am and left only as it shut at night. One day (Saturday, if I remember correctly) Fernando Alonso drove past us in an F12 while we were walking into the gate. Unfortunately, it happened too fast to get a picture. :D

I don't know the Austin circuit at all, but if the experience will be anything like Silverstone then there'll be plenty for you to see and do all day every day. Go early, enjoy, and leave late. ;)

    All the best,
    Andrew.

Looking at the Sunday schedule, I'd probably try to arrive around 9:30. The Master's Historic race starts at 10:35 and that's always one I love to see. There will be plenty to do and see to keep you busy the whole day.

I assume since you are concerned about traffic, you are parking on-site? Traffic coming in hasn't been too much of a problem (they've opened some new roads), but leaving can be a nightmare. Count on a 20+ minute walk from your car to your seats.

As for the weather, they don't race if the helicopter can't fly, right? I'd imagine after Japan last year, they are probably sticking to that more than ever. So basically anything more than a light rain and they won't start. Luckily, it looks like most of the rain should be over by Sunday, and if it does come it typically moves through quickly. Definitely bring rain gear just in case, because other than the main grandstand and hospitality tents there is no cover at all.

Are you just coming for Sunday? I usually enjoy Saturday the most, lots of on-track action with the practice and qualifying sessions, plus the support races. Easier to get around the track and shorter lines, too. Last minute tickets for Saturday are cheap.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am arriving on Wed spending Thursday touring Austin and San Antonio. I have tickets for all 3 days with on site parking. If there are Thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday how do they do qualifying? Sunday should be fine but how do they set up the grid?

    Thanks

    Arnie
