    Hello Friends,

Recently took the 360 to the mechanic. We were talking about shifts and he mentioned that he can do an F1 relearn on it - he states that it would recalibrate the shifts on the F1 making it more crisp and responsive. I did a search on the forum and could not find the subject (perhaps not searching correctly) I presume this is done through computer calibration

Is this something you all have heard about, is it worth doing? Does it make a difference?

    Thanks,
    Coz

Does he just mean he'll upgrade the TCU software? Perhaps to the CS version?

Yes there is a self-learn (or "octopuss maneuver") that is carried out with an SD2. It generaly won't make shifts smoother though. It's purpose is to make the gear actuator select each individual gear a couple times, whilst doing so it takes a reading off two sensors placed on the rear of the actuator, to calculate the best figure. This is carried out usually after certain parts of the f1 system have been changed or if work has been carried out to the gearbox internals..

It needs to be plugged into a diagnostic tool such as an SD2. The car will then run through the gears in a manner similar to that in the below video (although in the video they are using alternative diagnostic equipment).

You could have your PIS checked and optimised on the SD2 and that could alter shift performance.

Graham- When the SD3s came out, I assumed a bunch of SD2s would appear on the market at reasonable prices. Wrong. Turns out the SD2 works better than the SD3 for cars like the 360 and 575s, so the pros kept them. Duram Plummer's attempt to make a reasonably priced substitute has not borne fruit yet, and he has been at it quite a while.

So the ones I have seen are $20K+.

The SD2 uses exactly the same software as the SD3 for all the cars prior to 612. The SD3 turns into an SD2 through a software program called "porting". It is a better machine than the SD2, faster, much more powerful and able to carry many many software programs, capability to flash program ecu's, has Bluetooth and covers far more cars. The SD3 covers Ferrari and Maserati. It is an urban myth that the outdated SD2 is better, a myth usually perpetuated by shops that only own an SD2.
