I wonder why they lost so many technical staff suddenly.

Soon Russell will feel sorry to have joined Mercedes !

Just imagine : eight years in a row WCC.
Absolutely inhuman statistics in this sport.
Finally they are human after all!

Probably money and different benefits. Less pressure. Happened to Ferrari, happened to McLaren and Williams, now it's happen to Mercedes.

Mercedes really and truly didn't think the these massive regulation changes were so great, that they needed to be willing to sacrafice time spent on last years title run in the name of not getting caught out by them.

The W13 is what happens when you get arrogant and don't take testing seriously. Again, a cautionary tale for other teams.

Designers, engineers and mechanics like to go from team to team to gain experience, mostly when they are young.
Just look at the career path of Adrian Newey, Ross Brawn, etc ...
So I can understand the constant migration, and having a few WCCs on your CV can attract a higher position, etc ...
With the budget cap, I don't think the financial incentive exists so much now.
Some teams even had to made some staff redundant to meet their payroll target.
But Mercedes has been bleeding compared to other teams, it seems.

I must say that FP2 had my stomach in knots. Mercedes up at the front? I wondered if the Ferrari curse would come true? Still have no idea what Ferrari was doing during FP2. The race was another thing entirely...it was great. Yes Max won on the last two laps...maybe because he held back and saved his tires for an attack at the end. If so, it worked. Everyone got great information from today's sprint race and I wonder how it will change tire strategies for tomorrow. Sainz did a great job...recovered every possible position to put him in the top for, next to Perez for the start tomorrow.

Ferrari can't be lulled into thinking that the first three races will be like tomorrow or the races to follow. They have to keep searching for every little bit of advantage they can find. I hope it is dry the entire race tomorrow...rain can only mean unpredictable luck...we don't need that. Red Bull will be fighting us all the way, we cannot count on anything defeating them other than us being faster. I do like the way the drivers chatted with each other following the race. It says to me that there is mutual respect between them, and that can carry over onto to the track. Good clean racing...no divas.

Something has been happening internally with Mercedes. One can't help but wonder if the environment is toxic.

It's quite interesting to me the fact that Mercedes has basically struggled with tyre warm up since they brought Brawn. They never fixed that issue. They had expensive and clever remedies (DAS, brake magic for example) that didn't affect the advantages of a chassis that's slow to warm tyres (the advantages of that is excellent tyre longevity and easy to drive, all round car), and of course in the early hybrid years they had an insane power advantage that masked their tyre issues, so they just ran higher power until the tyres warmed enough and turned the engine down.

With DAS taken away, and I believe brake magic setting as well, and lower temp tyre warmers, one of the problems Merc seems to have is warming their tyres.

Circumstances helped Mercedes mask issues before with tricks and higher engine modes. Perhaps their team is struggling to find actual solutions now rather than just give a bit more power...

Certainly wasn't a good look when Toto refused to shake Horner's hand after Abu Dhabi, and refused a drink with him. Together with Toto's outbursts in the pits, you can only imagine how he is behind closed doors. I don't want to say the guy abuses anybody, because such accusations require evidence, but I can imagine his temper tantrums are at times toxic to deal with.

dont know if anybody said this already, but i think leclerc has the better race start position for tomorrow since he is on the rubbered side of the track....he gives up one point today, but is likely to win the drag race to turn 1 on sunday.

It is called a budget cut.

Any business that goes from $400m spending budget down to $140M spending budget will have to get rid of personnel.

This is exactly what's been happening.

Mercedes have had issues with the car before that they could overcome by having a better PU. They weren't going to catch Red Bull last year, until their engine department ok'd going for broke on the highest setting in the final 4 races.

Now they're not the kings on power anymore, and the car designs lacking is too great to overcome under the new regs.

I laughed when I heard Mercedes fans complaining about the budget cap. Mercedes agreed to it, assuming it would lock an advantage for them. Nobody held a gun to their head anymore than anyone forced Ferrari, Renault, and Red Bull to agree to the token system. And if they're thinking Ferrari and Red Bull are going to be flexible, they're in for a rude awakening. Deal is a deal, like it was in 14'.

A GP isn't settled in a drag race to the first corner, fortunately.

I’d be interested if the Italy based teams have an advantage through Decreto Crescita. It’s a big advantage for the Serie A teams like Inter, Milan and Juve since it significantly reduces their payroll expenses for foreign signings.

I’ve already heard that Sauber could be forced to move due to the budget cap. I can imagine that being in Switzerland doesn’t help when the financial wiggle room is so tight.

No it doesn't ! The race to the first corner has less and less importance these days, as proven today.

+1. All racing. No contrived pit stops for “tyre management.”

Proof today of that as you post!

Tyres proved again the weakness of a team. Ferrari seemed better on tires than RedBull lately. Not today. Tomorrow is longer - clear now softs are not a great option in similar conditions if they are the same tomorrow. Mediums will be the call possibly. Ferrari have work to do.
