Some more pictures I found in my office tidy up, my notes indicate these are the remains of three 126C2 turbo F1 cars, chassis numbers 049,050,051. The pieces of the chassis with chassis number have been cut off with an oxy torch, presumably as evidence to the tax office the cars had been written off. A bulldozer crushed the rest !!

Possibly the remains of the Villeneuve Zolder chassis, the Pironi Hockenheim and Montreal ones?

    best regards,

That explains why we don't see 126C2's at vintage events...bummer.

Indeed sad, but to Ferrari it was just that: junk.

BTW, looking at the used AGIP graphics, this seems to be from a much later date (The AGIP logo with the AGIP-wolf on top on a yellow background and the word itself below on a white background. I believe they are from 1988 and on).

These pics are depressing beyond words.

Doubly so if they are indeed the remains of Villeneuve's and Pironi's crashes...

From my understanding Senna's family bought Ayrton's helmet and had it destroyed...

There are some things that you do not want to be PHYSICALLY reminded of every time you see them...which is why they are destroyed.

It is one thing to see something in your memories, and quite another to have to physically see it right in front of you. Makes it much more painful to be confronted with the reality of it.

If indeed these were the chassis involved with these tragedies then this is one case where I am glad they were destroyed and not left as a physical reminder...

It would just not feel right to have to endure seeing the chassis that Gilles was killed in circling a race track.

In ancient times a warrior was buried with his weapons...out of respect to him that they would never be used by another.

I view these in the same light...

    Good post.

NASA follows the same policy with its fallen space crafts.

Isn't there a Villeneuve 126C2 in the factory museum?

Indeed you may be right on the age thing... on the flanks the 'crashed cars' had yellow AGIP stickers from san Marino onwards (Top Pic).. although they did have the white banded sticker on the nose of the car... the one in the pic looks much larger.. may just be the angle and the lack of anything to scale it against..

I do know that there are certain bits of the Villeneuve crash retained in Belgium by members of the BRAC.

(Dont know whos the pics are... using them for illustration only!)

as for the chassis numbers.. just got this message back
    " Chassis 049 - 051 were only used until 1981.
Villeneuve crashed 058 at Zolder and Pironi's Hockenheim crash was in 060."

I'd say it was one of the ones at the F1-88 (pic 3rd down)

the Chassis numbered mentioned were stickered like the last one! (the one in the Museum!)

So if these crushed chassis aren't the ones from the horrific 1982 accidents, then why are they crushed? What an unbelievable shame! Even if they are no longer functional, they'd make for wonderful museum pieces.

    Darn.

Actually looking at my copy of Rainer W. Schlegelmilch's epic Grand Prix Fascination Formula One if you look on pg. 88 (pics from 82 season), you will see the black roll-over hoop and metal (aluminum?) right underneath the roll hoop and looks to be the same design...others may have better pics and in the end only the factory knows...

All I can say if that if it was Gille's or Pironi's chassis then many would prefer not to have to ever physically see it again and if it is not, then it is a tragedy that they are destroyed...

Understandable but still sad to see. Slighty off topic, I have heard of a driver that has the cell from his high speed crash that almost killed him mounted on a wall to reming him of how lucky he is

Between them, these 3 cars participated in 28 races but only managed 4 points scoring finishes, not once on the podium. No wonder they were unloved at the time.

    Martin Donnely!

just to carry on the (unfortunate) theme a bit, until a few years ago Jochen Ridts car was still sat in someones workshop in the uk having been liberated from the garages at the back of the Monza pits, as far as i know its still in the same condition today as the day he crashed..

To add to the points above Sennas car was stripped of its engine (owned by Renault) and the rest of it was ground up by a specialist in removing hazardous waste..

fortunatly a lot of cars that have killed their drivers were destroyed in the accident... however in the late 60s and early 70s there were a number of cars thet were repaired and re-used...

Pironi also had a huge crash in pre season testing at Paul ricard in which I believe he totalled another chassis. I am pretty sure it was early 1982 though it could have been 81.
he actually ended up in the spectator area at the Signes curve, thankfully there was nobody there...
