I'll admit that it is gimicky to say the least. However, it will pretty well ensure that everyone will get out and run earlier and likely further into the sessions instead of having dead track time for the first 50% of a session.

I'm certainly not sure about the idea, but it would at least ensure they all get out there early in the sessions(s).

That was of course the idea behind the Q1/2/3 approach, but as we now know the quick guys barely bother in Q1 these days. Not what the fans (even us watching on the 'box) want to see.

At least they're trying & thinking about it.

    Cheers,
    Ian

We barely have a dead track during quali. Yellow flags here and there are going to make it a ****ing nightmare, and make quali a lottery.

If someone can please explain to me what was wrong with the format...because I don't understand this.

I agree. It seems like half of Q3 is watching the cars sit in the garage. Everyone goes out early to turn a lap just in case, and then sit in the garage trying to be last man out on track.

Solution to this is just as many tires as they want in Q3, is it not?

The "time ballast" idea is what really concerns me...fortunately it has a bit less support, but I wouldn't put anything past the 'powers-that-be' in F1.

Or a minimum number of laps everyone has to complete in each session?

    That's not true Bas.

We sit and watch an empty track for at least half of Q1 these days.

Sure, the Manors are pounding round, but we know they're not going anywhere.

Then the 'big guns' appear, do a couple of laps and move on. Hardly riveting.

Again, I'm still thinking about the concept, but I think it has potential.

    Cheers,
    Ian

That seems like a remarkably sensible & simple solution! :)

It's a tough one. Particularly in these days of limited lumps etc.

    Cheers,

Fair enough, I guess you have a point that there have been quite a few instances that the track was empty, mostly in beginning of Q1 and Q3...

IMO their ''solution'' is just unnecessarily complicated.

at least it's not what road & track had reported earlier where the committee was entertaining the idea of having fastest cars start from the back of the grid to spice up the race...

I don't like just arbitrarily whacking cars out of contention before the session is over. I somewhat like the lull that takes place before the storm.

I mean of all the things wrong with today's F1... for f sake... qualifying is the last thing I'd give my time to.

I kinda like this format. I think this elimination format will prevent cars just sitting in the garage during Qual waiting till the last moment to put in a hot lap. get out there early or get eliminated.

The other rules pretty much encourage this. It has been shown that saving a set of tires can sometimes trump starting position. They're writing rules to fix their rules.

The new format has room for more upsets. Everyone on track at once all going ham. Someone will get held up and eliminated. For people who do not want merc at the front all the time this isn't a bad idea

Personally I found the old format entertaining enough. May not even be implemented before Melbourne

I like the existing format better. Too many cars on the grid at the same time will cause problems.

Sounds like it will change from having everyone do a lap at the end of a session, to everyone doing a lap at the middle....

They remind me of a boss I once had. He couldn't handle real problems, so he constantly tweaked things that weren't broken and in the big scheme of things, didn't matter.

It's complicated, and difficult to police.

Why fix something that's not broken?

Imagine a race run like this. Last two standing would have to start from a stop say 2 laps before the end. A drag racefor sure. How exciting.

Of course that's not real motor racing.
